I like the media - they always lag behind what is really needed at the moment!

Market is booming and S&P overhigh - Go-Go raise money

Recession, inflation and war - Bootstrap forever

It's a bit more complicated than that. A lot of great things are COUNTER-intuitive.

For example, now, when the market is down, only try long-term investors are in the game. They are looking for big trends and resilient teams. If you match - it could be a great story.

I think the contrast the article is making between bootstrapped businesses vs funded businesses isn't that accurate. I mean, "When business owners bootstrap their business...they are expanding their business on a tight budget, and there is no extra room for excessive or necessary spending." and "Bootstrapping is creating a self-sufficient company that requires no additional financing."

I'd argue these things applied to funded businesses anyway. If you have an investor, you probably need to justify what you're spending their money on to an extent because they'll want to see it's giving them a good return...otherwise they wouldn't have invested/continue investing. Likewise, even a funded company wants to see the business could survive on its own - I doubt anyone's plan is to rely on funding in the long-term.

I'd be curious to know how many Indie Hackers on the platform bootstrapped out of necessity (i.e. they didn't have another option), or because they wanted to prove they could do it. Although I would assume in a lot of cases this is something that probably evolves - i.e. a lot of people here probably work on a few things initially and only consider asking for external funding once they have enough traction to attract investors?

And I think in many cases, it is the smart choice to bootstrap and de-risk the business, then potentially raise funding in favorable terms.

Personally, I thought I had to go the VC route with EnVsion but we failed to raise VC funding and had to bootstrap by default.

Looking back I’m glad this happened because I’ve been able learn loads from successful bootstrapped founders via this community and others.

Now I seek optionality while building my business. I’ll focus on de-risking the business and grow revenue. Over time depending on the growth trajectory of the business and our own desires we may seek external funding, on our own terms.

Yeah exactly, she mentions a lot of businesses can and do combine both methods. Seems ideal if you can get there.
