In my newsletter Fake Mayo I share stories (interviews) of how founders got their first users or customers.

Philip Sergelius, a 37-year-old physicist and semiconductor professional based in Germany, co-founded NerdSip with his colleague Max to reclaim wasted commute time. Launched in March 2026, NerdSip is a micro-learning app that uses AI to break traditional learning boundaries. Instead of rigid subjects, users can type in any curiosity to instantly generate customized courses complete with text, AI illustrations, quizzes, and a playful, game-like experience.

The heart of the app is an advanced algorithm. Every generated course flows into a shared feed, allowing thousands of strangers to collectively build and self-curate a massive, growing pool of general knowledge.

Operating as a side hustle during early mornings and weekends, the duo has scaled the business organically on a budget of under $500. SEO serves as their main growth driver, accounting for over 40% of new users via their blog. AI search citations follow closely at 28%. Additionally, their viral panoramic content on TikTok has surpassed 10 million views, while programmatic long-form videos gain traction on YouTube. High-quality backlinks further boost their digital footprint, leading to organic coverage in global newspapers.

Built on a flexible tech stack using a Convex backend, React Native, and Google’s Gemini API, NerdSip operates on a subscription model ($7.99 monthly or $49.99 annually). By July 2026, less than five months post-launch, the app achieved over 10,000 downloads, a 4.8-star rating, and crossed 100 paying subscribers, generating $3,000 in monthly revenue.

The 28% from AI search citations reads like its own channel, but it's most likely the blog and the newspaper coverage being read back to them by a model. Which means the split flatters the wrong lever: nobody targets citations, you make pages quotable and the citations follow. Building mine I keep landing on the same follow-up question, which exact pages does ChatGPT name in the answer, not what percentage arrived.

What's interesting here is that under $500 and 5 months, Philip and Max have essentially created a measurement system that is their distribution strategy. They didn't guess at channels - they tracked which ones worked (SEO 40%, AI search 28%, viral content) and optimized from there.

The typical mistake is building first, measuring later. They inverted it: they measured relentlessly from day one and let the data tell them what to build next. That's why the blog feeds into SEO. That's why the TikTok content hit 10M views - they saw early signal and iterated on format.

Most side hustlers never get to $3K MRR because they're hoping one channel will work. NerdSip's founders knew they needed multiple channels to compress their timeline. They couldn't afford to wait for one thing to break through. So they built measurement into the launch strategy itself - not as an afterthought.

The real insight isn't that SEO works. It's that knowing your distribution channels at month 1 is the difference between growing in 5 months or 18 months.

10K downloads is impressive, but the channel mix is the more interesting part here. SEO and AI search already driving 68% of new users suggests the organic engine is doing much more than simply adding traffic. I’d be curious how that mix changes once the initial content advantage starts getting more competitive.
