A couple weeks ago, I read a post of a fellow indie hacker about his current mental health.
He was suffering from what is called brain fog.
What is brain fog you say?
Well, if you are reading this post I guess you have an idea of how it feels.
But just in case, let me tell you how I felt when I was going through it:
It is not that you feel like that EVERY day. It’s completely random. Like…one every 3 or 4 days. And it can REALLY mess up with your mind (and life!)
If you can relate to those symptoms and you have been trying to figure out what’s going on, please, keep reading below my answer to our fellow IH.
Please, share, like, do whatever you want but…
…Let’s raise awareness about this silent killer and help other people get the lives back.
I can recognize exactly what you are feeling! I fighted that for almost 4 years. I REALLY hope this reply gives you hope to fix it. Because
IT
IS
FIXABLE.
Do not stop looking for the solution.
It's not something that you are making up.
It's not your fault.
It's not that you are "broken".
It's not that you are "depresing" or "lazy".
You are just sick. That's it. And it will be fixed.
The same thing happened to me when I was 26, and I went to EVERY DOCTOR here in Spain, and all of them (except one) had no idea of what was happening in my brain.
They only knew that "something was off" and that "seemed to be related to the immunology system". Some said it was "anxiety", some said it was just the "I was not a teenager anymore" (!!!!!).
Damn, I thought I had a tumor or something in my brain! 😅
I remember feeling "broken".
I was working in merger & acquisitions and I had to organize my work so I always had a pile of "dumb work" to do when that "happened". I know what you mean by "it's entirely unpredictable when my brain will break and refuse to function". Some of my symptoms were:
After 4 years looking for a solution, a doctor told me:
"Look...I don't know what it is. But IT IS SOMETHING. And it seems like a food intolerance. I have read about cases like these lately. Visit this other doctor who is a specialist on food intolerance".
So I did.
A couple of weeks later, they made some test on me and detected that, even if I didn't have the "antibodies" (or something like that), I was genetically intolerant to gluten.
The doctor told me: "try not to eat gluten for a month".
And in a couple of weeks, those "periods" started to vanish. What before happened every other day, was then happening once per week. Then once per month...and now is history. :)
I am in the best shape of my life (at 35!), I created an ecom brand 3 years ago and I am now on the move for me next project (actually going to Bali for inspiration 😎)
So...
PLEASE don't stop looking for a solution. 10 years ago (when I had it) there was almost no info about this, but today a lot of people are suffering the same thing (brain fog), and doctors are begining to take it seriously.
Try to stop eating gluten! You have nothing to lose. (Please if there is a nutricionist in the room, avoid giving us the 'you need gluten if you are not celiac' talk...)
Today's gluten has something that hurts our brain in some way. I have no idea what it is, but there is plenty of evidence about that now. Just give it a try!
PLEASE, write me if you need to chat about it. I know how desperate it can be and I would be more than happy to help us much as I can.
Cheers!
Again, help us spread the word.
Brain fog is not your fault, and it’s fixable.
Informative
I've also suffered from some brain fog and you're 100% right, it's fixable and from my research food intolerance is a big contributing factor. Having tried various diets (vegan, pescatarian) and hacks (celery juice diet 🤒) etc, I've found that a pure carnivore diet has been a great elimination diet and is working wonders for me.
I guess each persona has his/her own "proper diet"!
I am sure '000s of people out there are suffering from these same symptoms and they are not even aware that they could get rid of them.
Really, I was even thinking about doing something to fix that as my next project 😅
It’s a very inspirational article, actually. I am struggling with this, too, and I thought it was mostly because of excessive masturbation. But it turns out this is not the only reason.
I never thought I could have any food impairments because I have always been eating everything and didn’t have any problems with my stomach. But I will go to a doctor and get myself checked specifically for gluten. Maybe it is the reason. I would be very happy to find out the core reason for this phenomenon.
I even thought it might be because I have some issues with my memory. But I took a brain health test, which showed my memory was alright.
Super relevant - thx.
I think gluten is a silent killer - research is starting to connect it to Alzheimer's and dementia.
All I know is that since going off gluten 18 months ago, I've been a changed man.
Get off the Franken-Wheat! You'll thank yourself
Thanks @Cowboy!
Don't know what's wrong with gluten, but it definitively hurts some of us to points that we were not even aware.
A year or so ago, I met a mom whose daughter COULDN'T WALK whe she ate gluten.
WALK!
Doctors told the parents (for months) that the girl was just "faking it" so she could stay at home instead of going to school. (!!!)
The amount of impotence and lonelyness one feels when you face those kind of situations is overwhelming...
Wow, that's both crazy and tragic that she couldn't even walk. Unreal.
Humanity needs to be asking more pointed questions and funding more research about all of this. For me, the gluten causes moodiness which definitely does not help when you're bootstrapping and trying to keep you mindset in the right place for the challenges of business.
Thanks for the insightful post @ikigai 🤔
Have a productive week! 💪
