Breaking Routines Helped Me Build My Indie Project (Yumzy)

Most advice we hear in entrepreneurship circles is about consistency: ship every day, stick to routines, be disciplined. And it’s true—those habits are what keep projects alive. But I’ve learned that sometimes, stepping outside of the routine is exactly what pushes a project forward.

When I was building Yumzy, my AI-powered cooking assistant, I had a solid daily workflow: coding in Next.js, refining prompts, shipping features. It worked, but after a while I realized I was running in circles. Progress felt “safe” but not necessarily innovative.

What actually unlocked growth was breaking out of the loop:
• Talking to people outside of tech circles who just love cooking. Their feedback shaped features I never would’ve thought of.
• Switching my work environment and taking brainstorming walks—sounds small, but that’s when some of my best UX ideas came.
• Even experimenting with marketing in unexpected communities gave Yumzy early traction I didn’t anticipate.

The lesson? Routines create stability, but breakthroughs often come from intentional disruption. As indie hackers, we’re not just building code—we’re exploring possibilities.
