Brexit Day!

After the last couple years actual Brexit day has slipped past under people's radar.

So for those running software/services business in the UK tomorrow means the following:

  • There is no longer a VATMOSS threshold for UK businesses. So if you were not VATMOSS registered and based in the UK, you now need to register. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then this is the simplest explanation I've seen https://goselfemployed.co/vat-moss/

  • Assuming you make a sale in February you will need to register a new member state of identification by 10th March. You can register in any EU state, but Ireland will make most sense for most consider it's the same language.

  • Then you'll need to file 2 VATMOSS reports for Q1 2020, one for UK (1 Jan-31 Jan) and Ireland (1 Feb - 31 March)

I think this is more a concern for next year: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pay-vat-when-you-sell-digital-services-to-eu-customers-after-brexit

Although the UK technically drops membership from the EU after today there is still an 11month (if not extended) transition period wherein not much really changes.

So I'm not 100% clued up on this, being based in the UK. But I believe you'll need to register in the UK to pay VAT on British consumers purchasing digital services.
