Bringing Back the Arcade: Why I Built Play Free Arcade

๐Ÿš€ Launching Play Free Arcade โ€” A Free, No-Friction Arcade Game Hub

Hi Indie Hackers! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm excited to share the first version of my latest side project: Play Free Arcade โ€” a free-to-play arcade game site where anyone can jump in and enjoy classic and modern arcade-style games with zero downloads, logins, or paywalls.

๐ŸŽฏ Why I Built This

Iโ€™ve always loved the simplicity and fun of classic arcade games โ€” fast to start, easy to learn, and just pure fun. But most gaming sites today are cluttered with ads, slow load times, and require unnecessary sign-ups.

So I decided to build something better:
โœ… Fast-loading
โœ… Mobile-friendly
โœ… No registration required
โœ… Just games โ€” free and fun

๐Ÿ›  How I Built It

I'm using modern web tools (Next.js + TypeScript + Firebase/DB in the background) to keep things fast and scalable. The current version includes a curated collection of open-source and licensed arcade games, with new ones added regularly.

๐Ÿ’ก Who Itโ€™s For

  • Casual gamers who want to kill time without friction

  • Parents looking for safe games for their kids

  • Retro fans who miss the good old Flash-style arcade days

  • Anyone who just wants to play, not pay

๐Ÿšง What's Next

  • ๐ŸŽฎ Add user accounts (optional) to save high scores

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Improve mobile layout and responsiveness

  • ๐ŸŒ SEO and localization for non-English users

  • ๐Ÿ•น Add more original and indie games from other developers

๐Ÿ™Œ How You Can Help

If you like the idea, please check it out, give it a try, and let me know what works and what doesnโ€™t. Iโ€™d love your feedback.

Thanks for reading โ€” and happy gaming!

Love this. How difficult was it to source all the games? Are there repositories to choose from? Did you have to set up licensing deals or are they open source?

Hey Shuohao โ€” this is super fun and nostalgic ๐Ÿ‘พ
Love the "no friction, just fun" vibe. I checked out playfreearcade.com and it really nails the instant arcade experience โ€” no login, no popups, just click & play. Exactly how it should be.

I'm building ZugFlow, a SaaS for small service businesses like salons/barbers, and even they ask for โ€œquick gamesโ€ in their waiting rooms for clients or kids
so I totally see a use case here beyond casual gaming too.

    A few thoughts:

    • Consider adding โ€œContinue where you left offโ€ logic for returning players (even without login)

    • A low-key leaderboard per game might boost engagement without requiring accounts

    • Iโ€™d highlight your mobile-optimized aspect more โ€” the mobile gaming market is huge

Also: design is clean, very retro-modern. Respect for going with TypeScript + Next.js + Firebase โ€” smooth stack.

Let me know if you're ever open to collabs or embedding versions of your arcade in third-party SaaS/dashboards. Might be fun for side integrations.

Keep it up & congrats on the launch!
