Buffer is discontinuing Social login. Is there anything I am missing?

This weekend, I planned to add social login to careermove.io but seeing that Buffer is about to discontinue social login got me confused and thinking.

If Buffer only uses email and password for login, why should I bother using social login for ca

For me, as a user, I only use Google as a social login provider, and I'll only use it on sites where my account isn't terribly important. I, frankly, don't trust important accounts to a provider who might lock my account without recourse. My reader account on Medium is a great example: if I lost access to that account, I wouldn't care.

Anything that matters, however, gets a username and password.

Actually makes sense for Buffer, when you have people connecting so many different social media accounts, knowing which one you logged into with Buffer was probably causing more confusion than helping.

When they started and you could basically connect one account it made more sense.

I'm glad I went with social login with Pod Hunt, but at some point the time will come to retire it there too. For me being able to connect users with their social media presence made sense.

Not sure what the use case is with CareerMove but if users will be sharing content to social media, then reducing the number of steps people have to take may well help in the short term too, if there isn't a need for the social media account and you're just using it for authentication purposes then it may not be needed.

I prefer logging in with email/password because I don’t want FB to map all my activity for example. But for my business I’m considering implementing Auth0 so I can enable login with FB/google/Apple/etc. This has to with my niche which is users who aren’t particularly privacy conscious, and most likely all have FB accounts.

Personally, I always prefer making a separate account. I don’t think it’s necessarily a rational decision. I just don’t feel good about it. Part of it is also that the permission system is confusing and services often ask for more then they need.
