Build-your-Prod-K8s-infrastrcture as a Service
trying to figure out how to test this idea outside of the current "demand" that I see this in.
In a nutshell, I contract as an SRE into companies who are trying to deploy their first cloud native application into K8s and (usually) have not done a great job setting their infra up properly and are having lots of stability, deployability and security-sign-off issues.
In this market there's a lot of demand for my services (4 years going contract to contract doing this same thing). But its all big corp enterprises...
I was thinking of going into business for myself to quickly create, secure, test and implement these cloud infrastructures for startups and small businesses looking to get into K8s & cloud, and save them a lot of tech debt down the road..
I know startups/small business don't have the $$ enterprises do, and I would def go for simple/low-cost architecture patterns etc.
Anyway.. does this service sound useful to you or if you know of any startups, would this be something that might solve their infra pain-points?
Have you looked at https://gruntwork.io/ and https://www.pulumi.com/? Both companies offer a subscription service for managing some of the burden related to infrastructure. You might be able to do something similar because your idea is a legitimate pain point for almost everyone in the bay area. They buy into K8s for everything but have no idea what they're doing. So part of your subscription could be documentation and training material.

Yeah I'm a big fan of gruntwork, and just checked out pulumi now as well (thanks). And I hear you on the documentation & training material - almost equal parts of all my contracts outside of building the thing is documenting it and training the permanent staff.
I'll work this idea through a bit more and see what it can look like. Bay Area huh? Now I just have to figure out how to provide my services remotely (effectively) from New Zealand haha. Thanks man.
