Building 100 Backlinks

This is a KatLinks story by Josh Pitzalis, co-founder of Chirr App.

Chirr App is a tool that helps you write Twitter threads. Our approach to SEO has been to build something great and hope people link to us because the tool does its job well. The approach has worked so far, but now I’d like to get more actively involved.

I set myself the goal of building 100 backlinks this quarter.

"Asking People For A Backlink Feels So Icky" and "I’m essentially asking a stranger to do me a solid for absolutely no reason.".

I LOLed when I read this. :-) Its so true. Can totally relate.

It took me a while to figure out why I felt so uncomfortable with it. Glad I was finally able to articulate it.

Josh here. Happy to answer any questions about the post.

On the other hand, if you have experience building links and see any red flags or have suggestions, please let me know. I’d appreciate any feedback or pointers.

Hey Josh, as you say in your article, one way to gain backlinks is be the source for a journalist . I've actually found this the easiest way to get high value backlinks because it's seen as a fair trade for both parties.

I built a tool to pull in journo requests from the web for my own use but have recently spun out a SaaS version - https://www.sourcee.app. It works on a keyword system as well so you only get notified about requests relevant to you rather than getting bombarded with emails, looking at you HARO 👀.

        Fantastic.

        Thank you for the recommendation.

Do you have any guidance on how to get good at landing these kinds of opportunities?

I've responded to a bunch of HARO opportunities but I never heard back from any of them. It's hard to get better at the process with so little feedback. Was wondering if you have resources to point to in terms of upping my game here.

Hey Josh, sorry for the late reply!

That would be a great topic for a blog post :) I think it boils down to:

          1. Speed - answering quickly so you are at the top of the pile.
          2. Having a hook - Something quirky or unique to make you stand out.
          3. Numbers game - I always hate being told this 😅 but a bit like cold calling/emailing you need to just grind it out and you will finally get results.
