Building a 100% serverless, zero-upload document utility suite (The PDF Gen)

Hey Indie Hackers!

I wanted to share a project I've been bootstrapping: The PDF Gen.

🛑 The Problem with Modern Web Utilities

Every day, millions of people upload highly confidential files—like invoice drafts, tax documents, government IDs, and proprietary company images—to random online converters just to run a quick compression or merge a few pages.

Most users don't realize these files sit on third-party servers, posing a massive data privacy risk. Traditional platforms rely on heavy server infrastructure to process files, forcing them to push restrictive paywalls, aggressive tracking, or annoying watermarks on free tiers.

💡 The Solution: Processing 100% in the Browser

I built The PDF Gen to prove that intensive document manipulation doesn't require a cloud backend. By leveraging modern Web APIs and client-side JavaScript, 100% of the computation is offloaded directly to the user's browser.

Whether you are using the Markdown to PDF Composer, compressing multi-megabyte images via the Offline Image Resizer, or creating professional invoices with the Invoice Generator, your files never leave your local device.

📈 Why This Architecture Rules for Bootstrappers

Aside from absolute data privacy (making it inherently compliant with strict GDPR and HIPAA guidelines by design), this architecture has been a game-changer for me as a solo founder:

  • Near-Zero Server Costs: Since the user's CPU does the heavy lifting, my hosting overhead is minimal.

  • Infinite Scalability: The platform can scale to millions of users without needing expensive database upgrades or cloud rendering servers.

  • Instant Speed: No server uploads or downloads means zero network latency for file processing.

🚀 What's Next

Right now, the suite features 17 tools completely free of watermarks or accounts. Over the next 8 months, my goal is to scale organic SEO traffic to 100,000 monthly active users (MAUs). Once we reach that baseline, I plan to roll out privacy-friendly display ads and a premium developer API tier for automated document workflows.

I’d love to get the community's feedback on the user experience and the tool's performance. Check it out here: thepdfgen.com

The zero-upload architecture is the strongest part here. For documents people may not want to send to a third-party server, keeping processing in the browser makes the privacy proposition very easy to understand.
