Hey, I am building my first side project, it's a chrome extension.
The idea behind it is that I keep losing track of my software subscriptions and sometimes I forget if I still subscribe to a particular software I don't actually use, so the bills still go on...
What do you think? do you have the same problem? Here's my landing page:
https://applist.launchaco.com/
I build the landing page using launchaco.com, it's super easy and fast. Please give me some feedback if you don't mind.
I'll launch the product very soon on Chrome Webstore.
I think the real value proposition in this space is not around forgetting subscriptions, that's a problem that targets freelancers who will never upgrade to your paid plan. Additionally there are many services out there that target recurring subscription detection for individuals from their bank accounts ie input-less.
The real value proposition in the business case is being able to plug in to utilization and being able to tell me which ones are still worth it... which would require a more expansive app than a chrome extension if your paid subscript is still to include teams.
Perhaps you could target tracking some interesting metrics around how often a user actually logs in or uses certain features in web apps they pay for to help them know on a month-month basis is this still worth it to me? I think this is a big opportunity.
I don't really understand tracking free apps outside of trying to use this as a bookmarking tool of sorts (and yourself trying to capture structured user data) as I think the chrome app launcher and bookmarks bar already handle this beautifully.
As a sidenote I don't know if you are affiliated with launchaco or if this is sneakily a promotion for them but that product is beautiful.
Hi @nicksagges, thanks for your feedback.. for the sidenote, I am not affiliated with launchaco at all... ๐
You are right, I also don't think business, that has a budget, will see the reminder as a solution, except freelancers that will never upgrade into paid plan. Nice point!
Seriously, look into usage. There are many apps that do what the commenter above listed out. As a chrome extension you have a unique ability to see your user's utilization of the web. You have their trust once they download your chrome extension, now bring them great utility from that gift.
Thanks @nicksaggese, your feedback is awesome!
but I am still thinking about privacy, let say you are a part of a team, your manager invites and asks you to install this chrome extension so that he/she can track your activities on the software, do you feel comfortable as a team member about privacy?
Employers already track team members via much more invasive tools like rescue time or simply looking at traffic tunneled via a VPN. I think that's the advantage you have is that the tracking is extremely limited in scope.
In the end, you aren't selling this to the team members you're selling this to the manager/owner/operator. He/she can mandate whatever they want. Slightly bleak way of looking at things but I don't think this is a blocker.
Hi @rizkiaditya
This is a cool idea. Good work on the landing page as well ๐
I see that people have already provided some awesome feedback. I'd like to add 2 cents as well.
From the screenshots I couldn't understand how you are going to do this. More clarity would help in building trust in the product.
Is it possible to receive alerts when the subscriptions are reaching their renewal date. If yes, then it should be highlighted in the landing page.
Not sure whether individuals would pay for such a service. Businesses do use a lot of software services, so they could be your target customer. I would advise reaching out to businesses and research whether they see this as a problem.
Hi @dreamer87, I am still adjusting the content of the landing page, especially the screenshot part ๐, thanks for the feedback ๐
My first assumption: for individuals/freelancers, it matters when they know when they will get the bills, for business, it matters when they know which apps their team actually use.. what do you think?
I guess that's something to validate. Personally, there is enough info provided by inbox to know when they are getting billed.
But if you had to target one audience first, which one would you choose ?
Cool idea Rizki. I think the problem exists, especially for consumer subscription services. The approach you're taking with a chrome extension is different than anything I've seen before.
There was a company that tackled a similar problem called BillGuard. It was acquired by Prosper and rebranded as Prosper Daily. They closed it down last summer. It linked to your credit card and allowed you to identify subscriptions or any other unwanted charges. I think it also tracked your credit score.
In terms of a revenue model, one interesting angle could be looking at how you can provide value to the subscription companies themselves. One thing to keep in mind is that the idea of auto-renewal hurts these services on the front end, because people are more measured about enrolling in things that have auto-renewal.
The free tier you created definitely makes sense. I think it's harder to justify charging a fee to the consumer for the value prop you're describing. As a consumer it's hard to absorb a guaranteed fee today in exchange for preventing a potential future fee.
Hi @Iain, thanks for your feedback. I didn't know about BillGuard before, thanks for pointing out.
What value prop do you think the app should provide so that you, as a consumer or professional, are willing to pay?
I am also thinking to give software discounts to consumers, similar to AppSumo, so on the other hand, to help service providers market their service, but I am not sure about it...
I think you're on the right track with the last part. Overall I think there are a lot more opportunities to help the service providers in ways that justify being paid.
As a subscriber I don't know if the pain of tracking charges is so acute that I would pay for relief in any scenario, but I'm only one consumer. Don't let that discourage you from talking to other users.
As Nick comments below, I am also thinking to create a usage tracking, so you as paymaster know if the software is really worth you to pay, what do you think about it?

Hi @thomasm1964, thanks for your feedback. I am thinking that too, but just curious, since I don't have any personal subscriptions, except business software, do you think people will feel comfortable to know their personal subscription list, such as gym membership, book clubs, etc, via chrome extension?

I build the chrome ext as frontend, so the data will still go to server. User need to register/login to use the ext...
Yes, I am considering that too, free plan can be painful. Do you think $4/mo is a reasonable price for this app?

awesome insight! But I am still thinking for user's payment integration part since I am not from USA or Europe, it's hard here to get bank account API, as an alternative, maybe users submit the total payment each item and the invoice date manually, after that I can push reminder periodically...
