Building a Classifieds Platform for Four Different Markets

I am building a classifieds platform that currently supports the United States, Ukraine, Canada and the United Kingdom.

At first, I thought adding a new country would mostly involve changing the language and currency. In practice, every market required much more work.

Each country has different:

  • Location structures

  • Address formats

  • Currencies

  • Category names

  • Search terminology

  • User expectations

  • SEO routes

  • Content moderation requirements

For example, users in the United States expect states and ZIP codes. Canadian users expect provinces and postal codes. The United Kingdom needs a clear separation between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ukraine requires Ukrainian language content, regions, cities and local payment or delivery terminology.

Another challenge was the category structure.

A category name that feels natural in one country may sound unfamiliar in another. British users may search for "mobile phones" and "flats", while American users are more likely to search for "cell phones" and "apartments".

I decided to keep one shared platform while storing market-specific settings separately.

Each market has its own:

  • Country code

  • URL prefix

  • Language and locale

  • Currency

  • Category structure

  • Region and city data

  • SEO metadata

  • Listing rules

The current routes are structured like this:

/ United States /ua Ukraine /ca Canada /gb United Kingdom

I am also experimenting with listings that support both photos and videos. Users can publish standard classified listings, upload video content and create short vertical videos.

The project is still being improved, and I am currently focused on search, category quality, location accuracy, moderation and performance.

One of the biggest lessons so far is that international expansion should be designed into the data model early. Adding country-specific logic directly inside components quickly becomes difficult to maintain.

I would be interested to hear from other founders:

  1. Would you keep all markets in one application or create separate country-specific products?

  2. How would you validate categories and locations before launching a new market?

  3. Which market would you prioritise first for a new classifieds platform?

  4. What is the most important trust feature for a marketplace with user-generated listings?

I am building this project as a solo founder and funding it myself.

I would appreciate honest technical and product feedback.

Reading this, I kept wondering whether you're expanding into four markets or discovering which market deserves to exist first.

A lot of the complexity you described comes from supporting multiple countries.

The interesting question may be whether the strongest signal is actually coming from one of them.
