I wanted to share the story and inspiration behind my current side project, Usap.
Millions of Filipinos are hyper-active online, yet they donāt have a single, dedicated, text-first community space to call their own. Right now, everyone is scattered across noisy, chaotic mainstream social networks.
I realized that they deserve a true digital homeāa focused platform tailored for their culture, daily conversations, and deep connections, away from the global algorithm noise. Thatās why I built Usap.
I launched a fully functional MVP and managed to get around 100+ organic early adopters who are currently interacting on the platform. The feedback has been amazing, with users appreciating that it's a product truly "built for them."
To be honest, I recently asked myself if I should just give up and list the app for sale since the platform tech is ready. But I donāt want to walk away without even trying. I genuinely believe in this vision and want to see this community thrive.
My biggest mountain to climb right now isn't the codeāitās Marketing.
The real catch? I am not based in the Philippines. Trying to grow a hyper-local, culturally unique community from the outside is incredibly tough. I can build the tech, but driving organic user acquisition, seeding content, and tapping into the local culture from afar feels like solving a puzzle in the dark.
But Iām determined to figure it out.
Have any of you successfully grown a hyper-local community in a country you don't reside in? What are the best low-cost channels or growth hacks to reach users in the Philippines today?
Iād love to hear your advice, or even just chat with anyone who has faced the struggle of cross-border marketing. Letās connect in the comments! š
This is a real problem, but Iād be careful with the āgrowth hacksā framing.
For a hyper-local community, the risk is not just finding channels. The risk is seeding the wrong early behavior and ending up with users who join once but do not create the culture you need.
The fact that you already have 100+ organic users is more useful than it looks, but the next move has to be tighter than broad marketing from outside the country.
I wouldnāt solve that loosely in the thread because the first wedge changes the content, acquisition, and community seeding path.
If youāre open to it, share your email and Iāll put the tighter first-community growth path together properly.
