Building a Meetup alternative

Hey all 👋

Today it came out that meetup is going to start charging $2 per attendee per meeting which is going to kill of a huge amount of groups. This means there's massive growth potential as there will be a huge amount of groups looking for an alternative.

I'm keen on building an alternative platform - it's not that complex of an idea.

The tech stack would be Laravel on the backend, with Vue on the frontend (probably using https://inertiajs.com for the MVP)

I've planned out a fair bit already & scoped out a bunch of features that are missing from meetup (having used them to organise meetups before)

I was wondering if there were any designers/javascript front end developers who'd like to work with me on building it.

Feel free to reach out to me via twitter DM or email (both on my profile)

Hi! We're building an alternative to Facebook Events, Meetup, and Eventbrite called RSVP. Would love to chat with you! Our web app MVP is here http://rsvp.xyz - Currently building a mobile app with more social features - making it easier and more fun for people to find events/meetups and get to them. Feel free to get in touch. [email protected]

Alison. A nice clean interface. I have been the COO of an event management technology company in the past and wanted to understand your features vis-a-vis meetup. You have a great offering but aren’t you more a Eventbrite or Tito? Or did I misinterpret your value prop.

Thank you! Our MVP is somewhere in between Facebook Events and Eventbrite. However, we understand the importance of groups and are looking at how they can be integrated into our platform. We have heard from a few people now the pains of Meetup and agree there is no great solution out there for groups. However, on our platform, a group can start an account, get followers, and launch an event (free or ticketed). We are building out a central feed so that people will see the events from people they follow. We’re also building in other social features as we grow from MVP.

Someone is already building an alternative - https://eventy.io
Probably, you can join him as it's gonna be the stack :)

I have been creating and delivering event technology since 2006. When WeWork purchased meetup I was concerned about it's future, that has been amplified by their recent troubles. Happy to talk about your plans and provide feedback any time.

I would write an article 'Meetup Alternatives' and see if that is popular. Then use that to ask people what features they want. Content first play?

There is an open source alternative as well. https://github.com/lukevella/Rallly
