Building a semi-productized Web Design & Dev agency. Looking for feedbacks on the idea.

Hey, everyone

We're building a budget-friendly digital agency with a productized service that has a little spin to it. You can basically choose your services with our "project builder" (a shopping cart-like UI) while adding other add-on services. All service prices are available to you, so you can freely choose your own scope. After you submit what you have in your cart, we would jump on a quick call to better understand your project, and hopefully, we would start the project soon. What do you guys think of the overall flow?

Looks like a great idea indeed. Personally, I would love to see something like that real time. But clients generally tend to feel that a call or meeting might be better to explain the project. This comes from my own experience of running a digital agency myself.

While adding the "add to cart" definitely would make the process more streamlined, it would also add another layer of step on the client side. You should try to speak with potential clients to see if they might find this one step useful or not.

Hey, Harsh. I really liked your website's design btw and Brutask looks awesome!
And yes, thanks for bringing that up! We would really have to test the idea first with our clients and also try to release it quickly to get real feedback from the market.
Since you are running an agency as well, what do you think the potential hurdles would be on such flow?

    I will consider your service.

Thank you! Will notify you when it's released.

Hi @Teddybe i think we are in the same industry and with the same challenges. we currently do something similar to what you described, look at our website and see if it makes sense to talk about it. https://upsites.digital

Coming from experience both as a client and as an agency, I think it's best if you can provide actually examples for your services. e.g. an e-commerece building service with an actually e-commerece example for clients to play around with. This way you can ensure the client is on the same page with you regarding expectations, and you can minimize the communication time.

I'm acting like a (NoCode) user here (no technical experience):

    • Depends on the price I would see in the end.
    • Depends also on my knowledge and if I'm able to select the add-ons I need.
    • Also, how long would it take to read through the add-ons to understand what each add-on does.
    • How do you make sure that I select actually ALL add-ons I need.
    • And, how do you justify to the client that the client didn't select the right add-ons/not enough add-ons and suddenly the price goes up more than the client originally anticipated?

Great feedback & questions, Hannes! Really appreciate it!
As for add-ons, yes you can read the help texts and add or remove them freely. We tried to package our services only with the essentials so that add-ons are only optional for you.
For the last question, that is what we want to really address during the call, since we are coming from a traditional agency we do custom solutions all the time. But here we would really try to control expectations more from the beginning and if the price goes up, we would need to be transparent about why the service prices can vary.
But again, thank you for bringing these up!

I like the idea and have thought of doing this myself/planned on doing this. My biggest concern with this approach is dealing with projects that require custom solutions.

    1. 1

Well, that is certainly a big concern. That is why we are not ENTIRELY fixating the scope for our packages. During the discovery, the client can freely customize them

  7. 1

    Sounds interesting.

How would you differentiate this from a traditional suite of services or an agency business?

I want to ask, what is the "productized" part in this.

And I may be way off here, happy to be corrected.

    1. 2

I would say the productized spin is our packaged services that you can freely decide based on the price and scope. As for now, we're not that ready for a subscription model yet but I can assure that all of the one-time payments processes are smooth with stripe.

      1. 1

        Right, that makes sense👍

  8. 1

Biggest roadblock in creating the digital agency service to Productised service is "Each client have different requirements" how you will overcome this?

    1. 1

As long as we are setting clear client expectations by being simply transparent on where our service brings value for them and where it might fall short will help on that term I think. How would you also suggest overcoming it? 😅

What’s the difference between an agency that has a service catalog form?

    1. 1

Great question, Felix. Our services are all packaged and the base prices are all visible to anyone who is interested. We think it will help us to filter leads better as well rather than spending our time talking with non qualified leads. But we are still in the idea validation stage, so I'm more than happy to receive any feedback 😆 What do you think of it?

What do you expect to discover during the calls? Can you do something to make the call optional (and eventually obsolete)? If you can't, then go with the calls for now, but record them and analyze later to see the path from semi to fully

    1. 1

During the call, we're hoping to find out their problems and so we can really tailor down the service to them. The price might slightly change depending on their need as well but that is avoidable if they stick with the initial package. My team is coming from a pretty traditional agency model, so it feels like there is a whole mind shift that has to happen but I think testing the idea quicker might help us on that.
