Most Indie Hacker stories are about starting something from scratch.I’ve found working on a product you didn’t start brings a different set of challenges ownership, decision boundaries, and alignment matter a lot more than raw ideas.
Would love to hear from others building within existing products.
The hardest part of building inside an existing product isn’t the lack of ownership, it’s unclear ownership.
When decision boundaries aren’t explicit, teams hesitate. Work continues, but people avoid choices that feel irreversible, especially when they didn’t set the original direction.
Once responsibility is visible, who owns what, what’s stable, what can change, teams tend to move decisively, even if they didn’t start the product themselves.
This is true. Ambiguity around ownership creates way more drag than lack of ownership itself. People keep moving, but only in reversible ways.Once the boundaries are clear, decision-making speeds up almost immediately even for folks who weren’t there at the start.
