Building knob.monster: a browser SysEx librarian for vintage synth backup

Vintage synth SEO is weird. People google "Yamaha DX7 backup" or "Juno-106 SysEx" at 2am when a battery warning starts feeling real. What they find is forum threads from 2009 and MIDI-OX install guides.

I built knob.monster to be the answer that page should be: a browser-native SysEx librarian and cloud backup for 1980s and 90s hardware.

THE PROBLEM

- Desktop tools (MIDI-OX, Snoize, MIDI Quest) are tied to one OS, one machine, or a $200+ license

- Most owners store raw .syx files with no search

- Web MIDI finally works in Chromium — but pacing dumps wrong still bricks transfers on 8-bit synths

WHAT WE SHIPPED

knob.monster runs in Chrome, Edge, or Opera. Plug USB-MIDI, dump a bank, search patch names, flash back, download .syx anytime. No drivers. No install.

Dedicated parsers: Yamaha DX7 / TX81Z, Roland Juno-106, Korg M1, Jupiter-6, Casio CZ-101. Generic bulk backup for JV1080, Prophet, Wavestation, and the long tail.

Pricing: free tier to try, $39 lifetime Personal, $399 Studio (commercial shops and rentals).

TRACTION (month one, bootstrapped, solo)

- HN post on Web MIDI timing: 52 points, 40+ comments

- Beta hardware testing: Prophet Rev2, JV1080, TG77, Triton

- Outreach to LA rental collections and synth museums

- First-party survey: n=61 vintage synth owners (gear room vs bedroom vs commercial)

SEO PAGES THAT ACTUALLY RANK THE BUSINESS

If you are comparing tools or learning SysEx, these are the pages I care about:

- https://knob.monster — main vault + pricing

WHY INDIE HACKERS MIGHT CARE

Niche TAM, lifetime pricing, 90%+ margin, zero ad spend, one founder. The bet is not hypergrowth — it is whether SEO + community compound while the product stays capped as a side project.

If you run a rack, repair bench, or rental fleet and want a commercial backup workflow, reply here or try the free tier.

Keywords for the crawlers: SysEx librarian, vintage synth cloud backup, Web MIDI, DX7 backup, Juno-106 patches, MIDI-OX alternative Mac, browser SysEx tool.
