🚀 Building MusicStonks — a music stock market game

Hey Indie Hackers! 👋

I’ve been working on a side project called MusicStonks, and I’m finally ready to show it publicly.

It’s a game where you “invest” in music artists as if they were stocks. Their value goes up or down depending on how popular they are.

If you're good at spotting trends early, you can build a killer portfolio.

The idea came from talking with friends who love music and always argue about who's “blowing up” or “falling off.” So I thought: why not turn that into a game?

Right now you can:

Track artists and your portfolio 📈See who’s trending globally 🔥Compete on leaderboards (global or eith driends)

It’s also a fun way to discover new music — you often notice artists rising that you’ve never heard of.

I’d love to know:

Would you play something like this?

What kind of features would make it more fun or social?

Still early days, but trying to build in public and improve based on real feedback.

Thanks for reading! 🚀

Hey this looks like a cool project! I'm not sure I would play something like this for music, but I've often wished I had a game like this for sports! Like for fantasy football

Anyway cool idea, keep building 👍

Your idea is so interesting! It would be even better if we could see recent hit songs added for each artist. Also, it seems some niche independent musicians can't be found - may I ask how you collect these artists' information?

Thank you so much! Really glad you found the idea interesting.

Regarding the artist data, it’s sourced from daily listening trends available publicly, covering the top 5,000 most popular artists worldwide.
Because of this, some niche or independent musicians may not appear (at least for now).

I’m planning to expand this in the future to include a wider range of artists as the platform grows.

If you have any specific artists you couldn’t find, I’d love to know! It really helps guide what to prioritize next.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback 😊

This concept is wild! 🎶 Mixing music discovery with stock market vibes is super unique - love the creativity!

Curious, how’s the algorithm picking which artists are “stonks” or “not stonks”? Any plans to let users influence the rankings or add a social layer to vibe with others on rising artists? Keep rocking it! 🚀

Thanks so much, really appreciate the energy!
Glad the music + market combo resonates.

Right now, the “stock” value is based purely on daily listening trends, so artists go up or down depending on what people are actually listening to.

There’s already a friends feature: you can invite and add friends, and you’ll automatically be placed in a private leaderboard together. So you can compete to see who’s the best at predicting rising artists.

And long-term, once there are enough users, I plan to let buy/sell volume influence the artist prices, making it more like a real market where user actions shape the economy.

Would love to hear any ideas you have on making it more social or interactive!

This is such a fun concept. Love the idea of turning music discovery into a game, especially since people already debate “who’s next” all the time.

I’d definitely play around with this. One feature that could add to the social aspect is allowing users to create “mini leagues” with friends, where you can compete privately and trash talk each other’s picks.

Curious how you’re tracking popularity metrics for the artists — is it based on streaming data, social mentions, or a mix?

Thanks a lot, really glad you’re into the idea! 🙌

Totally agree, people already argue about “who’s blowing up,” so it felt natural to turn that into a game.

And yes! You can already add friends and automatically get a private leaderboard with them. Your own mini league where you can see who’s picking the hottest artists.

As for the data: it’s based on publicly available daily listening trends, reflecting real user behavior worldwide. No social mentions or hype, just actual plays.

Would love to hear what you think if you give it a try and thanks again for the great energy!

The idea is fantastic. But I would like to ask, can you listen directly to the songs composed by these musicians in this game? If you can, pay attention to copyright issues; If not, how can these musicians be listened to and loved by more people?

This sounds like a super fun concept — combining music discovery with stock market quirks is genius! 🎵📈 I could definitely see myself playing. Maybe adding artist-specific challenges or collaboration portfolios with friends could boost the social aspect?
