Built 3 Excel templates for SaaS founders and put them on Gumroad — here's what I learned about the digital product market

Wanted to share a quick experiment. I created three Excel templates specifically for SaaS founders:

  1. SaaS Metrics Dashboard — enter monthly numbers, get 25+ KPIs auto-calculated (MRR, churn, LTV, CAC, burn rate, etc.)
  2. Runway & Budget Planner — 24-month cash flow projection from one assumptions sheet
  3. Fundraising CRM Tracker — investor pipeline with stages, outreach logs, and follow-up tracking

A few things I learned that might help others thinking about digital products:

The niche matters more than the product. Generic "budget template" = drowning in competition. "SaaS metrics dashboard for founders tracking MRR and churn" = specific enough that the right person sees it and thinks "that's exactly what I need."

Formulas are the value, not formatting. Anyone can make a pretty spreadsheet. The reason someone pays $19 instead of building their own is that getting the LTV formula, churn calculation, or runway projection right is genuinely tricky. The templates have 1,010+ formulas across all three — that's the real product.

Excel + Google Sheets compatibility is non-negotiable. If your template only works in one, you lose half your market immediately.

Happy to share more details about the process or the templates themselves.

The formula complexity insight is gold. Most people sell templates as "beautiful spreadsheets" when the real value is "I spent 3 hours debugging the CAC formula so you don't have to." That pain point positioning would 10x your conversions.

We are looking for someone who can lend our holding company 300,000 US dollars.

We are looking for an investor who can lend our holding company 300,000 US dollars.

We are looking for an investor who can invest 300,000 US dollars in our holding company.

With the 300,000 US dollars you will lend to our holding company, we will develop a multi-functional device that can both heat and cool, also has a cooking function, and provides more efficient cooling and heating than an air conditioner.

With your investment of 300,000 US dollars in our holding company, we will produce a multi-functional device that will attract a great deal of interest from people.

With the device we're developing, people will be able to heat or cool their rooms more effectively, and thanks to its built-in stove feature, they'll be able to cook whatever they want right where they're sitting.

People generally prefer multi-functional devices. The device we will produce will have 3 functions, which will encourage people to buy even more.

The device we will produce will be able to easily heat and cool an area of 45 square meters, and its hob will be able to cook at temperatures up to 900 degrees Celsius.

If you invest in this project, you will also greatly profit.

Additionally, the device we will be making will also have a remote control feature. Thanks to remote control, customers who purchase the device will be able to turn it on and off remotely via the mobile application.

Thanks to the wireless feature of our device, people can turn it on and heat or cool their rooms whenever they want, even when they are not at home.

How will we manufacture the device?

We will have the device manufactured by electronics companies in India, thus reducing labor costs to zero and producing the device more cheaply.

Today, India is a technologically advanced country, and since they produce both inexpensive and robust technological products, we will manufacture in India.

So how will we market our product?

We will produce 2000 units of our product. The production cost, warehousing costs, and taxes for 2000 units will amount to 240,000 US dollars.

We will use the remaining 60,000 US dollars for marketing. By marketing, we will reach a larger audience, which means more sales.

We will sell each of the devices we produce for 3100 US dollars. Because our product is long-lasting and more multifunctional than an air conditioner, people will easily buy it.

Since 2000 units is a small initial quantity, they will all be sold easily. From these 2000 units, we will have earned a total of 6,200,000 US dollars.

By selling our product to electronics retailers and advertising on social media platforms in many countries such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, we will increase our audience. An increased audience means more sales.

Our device will take 2 months to produce, and in those 2 months we will have sold 2000 units. On average, we will have earned 6,200,000 US dollars within 5 months.

So what will your earnings be?

You will lend our holding company 300,000 US dollars and you will receive your money back as 950,000 US dollars on November 27, 2026.

Selling templates on Gumroad can work, but the real lift is not the file, it is getting founders to trust that your sheet saves them time on a very specific job, pricing, runway, or hiring. The ones that move usually have a tight use case, a preview, and a quick walkthrough video. Tradeoff is support creep, even low-priced templates turn into mini consulting if the instructions are not painfully clear.

Make sense, especially niche > product part. Out of curiosity, which of the templates is getting the most traction so far?

fellow gumroad seller here — we have 21 products on there (dev tools, templates, trading data) and the biggest lesson matches yours: the digital product market is insanely crowded but also weirdly underserved in specific niches. generic templates get buried. niche-specific ones that solve one exact problem for one exact audience actually move. what was your pricing strategy? we started at $5-19 per template and wondering if thats too low to signal quality or too high for impulse buys. also curious what your traffic sources are — gumroad discovery alone seems to send almost nothing for us.

The niche specificity point is underrated. I ran a similar experiment with content last year — 'AI productivity tool' got scrolled past, 'voice AI for people with RSI who type all day' got real engagement from the exact right people. Same product, completely different signal.

The formula complexity angle is smart positioning too. Pricing at £19 because the LTV formula takes 2 hours to get right is the kind of framing that should be front and centre in the description, not buried. Most people undersell the hard part.

What's driving most of the Gumroad traffic right now — search or your own promotion?
