Built a proximity-based dating/social app solo while working full-time — just launched on Product Hunt

I wanted to share something I've been building for the past several months, mostly nights and weekends around a full-time job.

Destiny Rings is a proximity-based platform (dating, social, and networking modes) built around Bluetooth-enabled smart rings. The core idea: instead of swiping through profiles, the app notifies you when someone compatible is physically nearby — at a bar, an event, walking down the street — and lets you send a signal, run a quick compatibility check, and reveal/talk in person if it's mutual.

A few things about the build:

  • Built the entire app solo — prototyped in Replit, migrated to Xcode for the final iOS build and App Store submission
  • Also doing the hardware side myself — BLE firmware on Nordic's nRF5 SDK, testing on dev units, managing manufacturing for the eventual production ring
    Filed a patent on the core matching mechanism (co-presence-verified, consent-gated matching)
  • Launching hyper-local first — Hoboken, NJ — rather than trying to go broad from day one, since the product needs density of nearby users to actually work

    The strongest part is launching hyper-local instead of pretending a proximity product works without density. The Hoboken-first approach gives you a much clearer way to test whether repeated real-world encounters actually create enough value to drive adoption.
