Built an AI accountability partner because working solo is hard

This year I decided to work on building small projects for myself. I had all the productivity tools - task managers, calendars, time trackers. But working on personal projects, I was missing something: external accountability. When there's no boss checking in, it's easy to let things slide.

So I built Kalen (getkalen.com) - named after a fitness coach who used to push me hard - an AI that holds you accountable by acting like your manager...It's all email based, no app or installation needed.

The system is simple:

  • Monday asks what you're planning to accomplish this week.
  • Wednesday checks how progress is going.
  • Friday follows up on whether you actually did what you said you'd do.

There is no app

The key insight is simple: external accountability changes everything. When you know something will check back with you, it changes how you approach your work.

Early users are finding the same thing. External accountability changes how they approach their work too.

If you work solo and miss having someone to check in with, give it a try!
