Built BY public is the new build in public

Hey indie hackers 👋

I've been a solopreneur for three years now, and always had the dream of creating a small studio of indie hackers.

It's not an easy thing to do though: I don't know many indie hackers in real life.

So yesterday, in the shower, I had an idea: what about building a project with everyone?

And that's how started my first BBP project: a screenshot editor 🤩

The idea is simple: the project will be broken down into several tasks in which everyone can participate. I'll choose a winner for each task, and implement their work.

The goal will be to sell the project for at least $10,000, and to share the money with everyone whose work has been selected.

Do you think we can do it 😄?

If you want to participate, it's happening on X.

    Sounds good.

But how will you gain trust? The paperwork of profit sharing and everything?

That's what almost stopped me from launching the project 😅! I couldn't find a simple way to build something "official" about sharing the money.
My only guarantee is my name. I've spent years building up an audience on X, and if I don't pay people when the project is sold, I could lose everything!

I'm aware that it's a very thin guarantee, and if the project works and I do others in the future, I'll try to find something more solid :)

        I understand.

You need to build a follower or audience to gain the trust for now.

Great job Thomas! This article is super inspiring and highlights how the community can come together and make an impact. I'm excited to see what this build by public model can create!

Nice idea, the problem I see with this is: I do some work with the chance to get a piece of a cake that is not guaranteed at all AND I don't even know IF I even "win" this task.
So I do work and have a chance it is not used and even if it is used the chance of it being worth it, is slim and (maybe far?) in the future and relies on your personal ability to sell this...

Sounds like it would be not worth my time. Rather contribute to open source, where I know I just gain some reputation or do my own projects after all.

I totally get you on this 😅.

It's a gamble, and there's no guarantee that you'll win anything (apart from some exposure on social networks). That's why I'm breaking the project down into several small steps: to avoid wasting your time.
What's more, even if I agree with you in principle, the marketing of the project won't be totally up to me: anyone who has earned shares will have a vested interest in spreading the word about the project. I'm planning to set up an affiliate system, and I hope this will motivate the winners to do a bit of marketing to increase the value of their shares :)
