I kept telling myself one more feature and then I'll launch, but it was never about features; it was fear. Building has a finish line, and launching doesn't, so my brain kept running back to the safe room, which was code, every single time the scary part got close.
Three things actually pulled me out. First, I stopped treating launch day like The Moment because, honestly, nobody is watching that hard on day one, and realizing that was weirdly freeing. Second, I started scheduling distribution like an actual task, in the same calendar block as coding; it's ugly, but it works. And third, I made the ask out loud to one real person instead of polishing forever for some invisible crowd. If you're the kind of builder with like 4 half-launched things sitting around, then this is probably the pattern, and just naming it is step one.
What have you built but not shipped yet? Drop it below; let's unstick each other.
I was stuck in this exact same loop until about 3 days ago. Instead of actually launching, I kept tweaking my product page, building out a demo page, rethinking my internal links, and adding more lines to my readme.txt. Anything to avoid hitting the launch button.
Since I finally took the plunge, I don't have a specific answer for your "What have you built but not shipped yet?" question right now. But I understand the feeling painfully well, and knowing myself, I'll probably fall into the exact same trap on my next project, haha.
Currently, my biggest struggle is exactly what you pointed out: the distribution. I'm having a hard time finding places to announce the launch. I just joined Indie Hackers but don't have the privileges to create a post yet, and my first attempt on Reddit got instantly nuked by an auto-mod spam filter.
It really hits home what you said—building has a finish line, but distribution doesn't. I'm definitely feeling that reality right now!
haha the readme.txt detail is so specific it hurts; that's the freeze exactly. anything that feels like work but isn't the scary button.
And yeah, Reddit auto-nuking new accounts is brutal, I went through the same thing. What worked for me was just commenting for a few days first, no links, till the account warms up, then posts stop getting deleted. IH post privilege unlocks pretty quick too once you're active.
What did you actually launch? drop the link here, let me take a look. Interested .
Thanks for the kind words and the solid advice! Yeah, I guess I just need to be patient and warm up my accounts first.
What I launched is "KU Sticky Video", a lightweight WP plugin that makes YouTube embeds sticky on scroll. I excitedly tried to drop the link here, but Indie Hackers just hit me with a "You're not allowed to post links yet." warning!
The single Product listed on my profile page is the very source of my headache right now.
But enough about me. Since your original post asked "What have you built but not shipped yet?", I have to turn the question back to you! What was the project that kept you stuck in that 2am loop before you finally broke out?
I'd love to hear what you are building.
haha yeah the "not allowed to post links yet" thing got me too at first, it unlocks after you comment for a bit. annoying but whatever. Sticky YouTube embeds is actually useful, wp people will get it instantly. honestly r/wordpress and the wordpress fb groups are full of people annoyed at ugly embeds, i'd just go hang out there.
the thing i was stuck on was Skyleap (getskyleap.com), it's basically for this exact freeze, built it because i kept getting stuck at 2am unable to hit launch myself.
what's your plan for getting it in front of wp people?
Gave GetSkyLeap a try! Really clean design, and the Witty tone output hit a nice balance between casual and builder-brained.
One thought: letting people choose upfront whether they're pre-launch or already live would sharpen the output a lot. For someone in my position — plugin's out, but the "how do I actually reach people" part is still a fog — the first half of the 30-day calendar felt a little like it wasn't aimed at me. A mode that starts from "okay it exists, now what" would've been the sweet spot.
As for getting in front of WP people, honestly still figuring that out. r/wordpress and the FB groups are a sharp call (thanks for the tip!), but for now I'm leaning more toward slowing down and building up some actual content on my site first.
I think the line "building has a finish line, launching doesn't" captures something a lot of founders feel but rarely articulate. Once you launch, the work shifts from solving technical problems to dealing with uncertainty, and that's a very different skill. Scheduling distribution as deliberately as coding is a simple idea, but probably one of the most practical habits for breaking that loop.
yeah exactly, it's a whole different skill and nobody warns you. technical problems have answers, distribution just has uncertainty and you have to get comfortable sitting in it. that shift messed with me more than any bug ever did.
I think that's where another strategic decision starts.
Founders often think the hard transition is from building to distribution.
I've found it's actually from solving known problems to deciding which uncertainty is worth committing the business to.
I have a couple of thoughts on that, but they're easier to explain than fit into a thread. If you're interested, what's the best email to reach you on?
