Built this screenshot tool to fix my own problem. Now it’s getting its first users

It’s been a few weeks since I started working on this, and I wanted to share how a small side project I built for myself turned into something I’m now trying to grow into a micro SaaS.

Shotlab is a tool that makes your screenshots pop by adding cool backgrounds, stickers, shadows and annotations—basically making them scroll-stopping.

I’ll be honest—I don’t have a huge number of users yet. But I’ve started getting early feedback, and a few signups… which already makes this feel real.

Here’s how it started:

Background
The idea came from scrolling on Twitter and noticing many posts were screenshots— mrr, metrics, dashboards, portfolios, etc.

The problem? Raw screenshots looked boring. And most tools were either too basic or too complex. I just wanted something fast.

The first version was intentionally simple: backgrounds, spacing, and pre-sized canvases for platforms like Twitter and Product Hunt. Nothing fancy—just enough to make screenshots look good in seconds.

Launch
I kept the launch simple. Posted a short demo on Twitter and ran a small giveaway.

That brought in my first users and, more importantly, validation that other people had the same problem.

Biggest takeaway: don’t wait to “finish” the product. Launch, get feedback and improve.

What’s next?

  • Improve the core editing experience by adding useful features

  • Experiment with different marketing channels

  • Staying consitent and focusing on getting the first 100 real users

If you’ve got any feedback or ideas, I’d genuinely love to hear them!
