Business Books & Romance Novels

I was walking through the business section of my local book store the other day and I felt so cynical. It was cover after cover making ridiculous, dishonest promises. It was all... kind of gross.

So I made a video about it: https://youtu.be/by1HxaL3NNI

I thought the indie hackers community (people who are typically allergic to bullshit and nonsense entrepreneur porn) might appreciate it. Hope it's not too cynical 😊

it is kind of cynical. i mean, it's super-easy and requires nothing to criticize... good video work though!

there are a ton of folks who have found a ton of value from books like these... they aren't for me, but, that doesn't mean that they are fundamentally bad.

and, i give a lot of props to authors for just getting a book published... it's a hard and long process and a lot of folks quit before they even get close to it. sure, there's a lot fucked up in the publishing world too, but... celebrating someone getting something out the door is always worthy of a 👏🏻 (or two).

i'm not sure where you're headed with this video. what are you suggesting as alternatives?

Fair enough! I do think criticism is necessary. Business books are often marketed dishonestly and I think that deserves to be called out.

So maybe the question is how to be constructively critical— maybe I could have been more balanced.

My goal was to provide a fresh perspective on business books. Because if these books are selling fantasy, isn't it possible that fantasy can temporarily satiate desire without pushing the reader to do anything?

Of course, it's possible I'm just tired and cynical of all the entrepreneur porn out there and I wanted to provide a counter-balance 😛

no worries! just honestly asking where you go from here. what's the next video?
