Having written many business plans, I've finally understood its power. If you skip crafting your business plan, your chance at success will decrease, and in the worst case, you won't make it.
But before we get into why you need one, let's take a step back.
It's a document describing:
Your business plan can be long and contain a lot of details. Or short and sweet with a few sentences for each topic. I always recommend the latter.
You will have to think about many essential details by writing one. In many cases, this exposes strengths and weaknesses you need to be aware of.
You might realize your business is not viable because of some small detail. Like legal/privacy issues, pricing, lead times, etc.
And as soon as you want to involve investors, freelancers, agencies, or a co-founder, you need one. How else will they understand your business in detail?
It's also a great place to store your thoughts and ideas in a structured manner. Personally, I don't remember much these days (thanks to Apple Notes & Google Calendar), so I need to write everything down!
Over the years, I've tried to compress my business plan template into the must-haves. You can get my template for free here, with real-life examples added too.
