Buy a domain, plant a tree 🌳
Hey Indie Hackers!
I’m looking for some feedback on a small project I’ve been working on while in lockdown.
I’ve always had a certain fascination with finding the perfect domain name for new projects — especially since I’m always thinking of new ideas to work on. There’s nothing quite like finding a short, snappy domain name that helps kickstart your new brand.
Additionally, I’ve recently been thinking about ways I can benefit the planet with the software I build. Using eco friendly providers for things like server hosting is one way to do this, but has such a small impact when building on such a small scale. I’ve always liked the idea of planting trees in different parts of the world in exchange for sales of a product or service. Lots of my favourite companies do this, and it helps every day consumers make an impact with regular purchases.
I’ve created https://nameplant.co as a way to combine these two ideas, and I wanted to share it here first.
I’d love to hear your feedback; is there enough information on the page? Is this something you as an Indie Hacker would use?

This is interesting. It looks like you guys buy domains and then post them for sale for $120 and the difference between the domain cost and price paid gets used to plant trees?
Interesting concept. To be blunt I probably wouldn't use it. I may not be the target market though. I do think if you pivoted and built a regular domain purchase site where the main goal was to purchase a domain name but you charged a premium for each domain and donated the difference to planting trees, that would be something I would consider. I would probably pay at maximum $20 a domain name per year for a site like this, knowing that it was benefiting the planet and giving me the domains I need. That's my take tho.
