ASK IH: What sort of tools/software do you use to stay organized and on track to meet your goals?
I am wrapping up the first iteration of my web app. I still have some minor issues to fix before I make it live, but I am starting to think about the bigger picture. Long term goals, marketing strategies, new features to reach the next step up. How do you guys keep track of everything? The more I think about all this, the more I feel overwhelmed. I feel like I am forgetting important things I thought of earlier. Is there a central place you like to keep all your goals, todos, etc. to stay organized?
what do you do with your phone? I put it face down. Tried a standing desk in my office but I was not convinced at all, it's healthier?
I put it on silent and out of my sight.
The standing desk helps a lot with posture and blood cirtulation... I'm not standing all day though, I stand maybe around 2 hours a day.
I basically use Trello for all of the concerns you mentioned. It's a great system for taking notes, organizing them into boards, further organizing them into categories, further organizing them into priorities; and once something is moved to Done... it feels good and is gone forever.
It use BitBucket for version control and deployment, which integrates with Trello; so I have that going for me.
I use Trello for backlog, ideas and other todos. Each in it's own board.
I use pocket for all reading material I find and bookmark for later.
Pen and paper for short-term todos and goals.
Solo dev here also working on the next iteration of my web app - which was a complete rewrite.
I never used any logging/tracking management stuff up until about 2 weeks ago. I used to keep things in the back of my mind. Constantly forgetting/remembering ideas.
So the past 2 weeks I've just used a Trello board to log everything. Thoughts, ideas, potential features etc. I've noticed that my productivity has skyrocketed as a result.
I have a much clearer plan of what needs to be done right now, whats not so important - and whats definitely not to worry about right now. I was my own worst enemy before, always thought was doing OK but my progress was slow and my motivation was lacking as I wasn't sure what I was working on next. Its also hard if you have for instance, a 30 minute window to get working on something. Without Trello before, I'd just procrastinate as I wasn't sure what was the most important thing to do at any one time. It is such a change, really can't recommend it enough.
I'm still maybe a couple of weeks away from being ready to re-release. I haven't done any marketing up to this point either, but I guess I'm just going to open another Trello board to track/log all marketing related things.
I'll also add that using something as simple as Google Sheets (Excel) for testing edge cases is quite valuable too. Very useful for brainstorming different scenarios and having a place to refer to going forward too.
TL;DR: Trello and Google Sheets for test cases
Trello - for my backlog
Google Keep - for my one-off todos
Google Sheets - for my KPRs and email lists
GMail with Streak - for my outbound pipeline
Android Loop Habit Tracker - for my recurring dailies
Hey buddy. Todoist (Task Management), Fantastical (Calendar) and Notion (Notes)
