Hey there, Jon Chui here. I've dreamed of starting a company, startup, product for 10+ years, ever since i wrote this blog post after graduating college in Vancouver, CANADA back in 2009 (10 years ago, wow) :
Fast-forward 10 years and i've done cool things (google maps, inbox by gmail, shazaam feature in google search on Android, 20+ other iOS apps for companies like The Onion, Activision Call of Duty, Food Network & Men's Health) , but still not my original dream.
I'm a bit worried that may never happen.
We took a 2.5 year sabbatical doing missions work in Hawaii, Philippines, Cambodia & Myanmar, and i thought that would clear things up for me.
The problem is I'm constantly seeing problems and ways the user experience can be improved. As a developer/engineer, i'm constantly asking the WHY ? questions, or HOW does this actually help the user ?!!?
Longer bio below:
After living in Silicon Valley for 3.5 years (google maps, launching inbox by gmail on android watch , building flight and smart cards for gmail, then owning Shazam for google feature), we sold everything and left to take our 2 boys around the world on missions, philanthropy and volunteering with a non profit called YWAM.
We then settled for 3 years in Hawaii, volunteering part-time and working part-time while visiting & serving the different bases in Myanmar, Philippines & Cambodia.
Now we moved Boulder to begin routes again and I’m entering back into full time industry as a tech consultant to help startups scale and grow ( currently CTO for sobergrid which helps ppl stay free from addictions , before for Kukui which helps mechanics and garage shops not suck, lol)
