Hey, people who journal/write
I'm really keen to hear what tools do you use for your tasks management and goals setting. Specifically:
- How often do you update a task list?
- Are you also journaling? if so, using the same tool or a different one?
- Are you using a paper or a software tool?
- If using software, which one (more than 1 is ok)
- If using software, does anything bother you in the product you're using?
I'm doing some research for a potential feature and would love to know how people manage tasks.
Thanks!
Hey Alex,
Sticking to personal projects & individual work here;
Hope this helps!
Thanks, Mark, that's awesome! It definitely helps.
Hi Alex,
I am not an experienced journal keeper, but I can suggest a great tool for that - notion.so.
This is the first tool I have a passion to open every day in the morning. You can organize there a lot of your daily routine:
(actually, there are a lot of templates for different needs)
You can totally replace trello for personal use because notion provides you with kanban boards as well.
Hope that my comment was useful for you 😉
Hey @KamilRizatdinov
Thanks! Yea, I know notion, and I do use it mostly for kanban/sprint planning and also as a whiteboard/notebook to throw things in.
What I'm interested though is how people use the tools they use.
Hi Alex,
I love these questions!
# How often do you update a task list?
This depends on the type of task e.g. for daily miscellaneous tasks like "take medicine" or "pick up milk tomorrow" I update the task list whenever the item comes to mind. For more specific task lists like work or personal projects, I have the list open somewhere and I just check off or add as the item is done.
# Are you also journaling? if so, using the same tool or a different one?
I've been journaling for a very long time and I believe that nothing beats the feeling of pen-and-paper! However, about half a decade back I lost my journal and other items in a fire and since then I've moved to digital solutions - I still carry around a pocket notebook though so I can write in it anytime inspiration strikes!
# Are you using a paper or a software tool?
As of now, I'm using software for almost everything except a pocket notebook I mentioned in the previous point and paper for other stuff like quick wireframes or quick pseudo code.
# If using software, which one (more than 1 is ok)
I'm a software junkie so I keep on trying out different tools but for now I have this habit of dividing my work into different apps:
# If using software, does anything bother you in the product you're using?
My biggest issue with all the existing tools is how they, at the end of the day, "force" you to use them in a specific way. I like OneNote because it lets you write anywhere on a page which is a sense of freedom. That's the reason I'm really liking the premise of Notion because I can write anything and then "drill" down into it for details.
I hope this helps you in your research!
This is awesome, @xmok! This is really helpful!
With regards to multiple task lists. Do you do them for work too? Do you follow any specific methodology?
Thanks!
Hi again Alex,
I most definitely have multiple lists for work. Since it's all in Trello, it's pretty easy to define who has to do what and when. There are 4 boards that I'm a part of:
It's mostly a traditional Kanban with "Backlog", "ToDo", "Doing", "Awaiting Approval", "Done".
However, for freelancing, I use a combination of another Trello board for clients, Excel as a make-shift CRM, Wave for keeping track of invoices and Keep for meeting reminders. It's not a very efficient system from the outside but I find order in chaos so it's easier to keep track of everything this way.
Hope that helps more!
Fantastic! That's exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you!
Hey Alex,
I don't use any. I'm pretty terrible at managing tasks... I hear a lot of people talking about Trelo. (Trello?)
I think I'm going to give it a try
Haha, nice :-) I used Trello the second day it was released. It's neat, and most tools nowadays just repeat what they've done.
Thanks!
