Can a WordPress plugin boost user acquisition?

"WordPress runs every third website on the planet". I've never checked this stat but I know there are a huge number of WordPress installations out there.

So I've been wondering whether having a plugin may be a good way of acquiring new users. My thinking goes like this:

1. I assume that there are 10s of thousands of searches for plugins every day
2. I assume that it's not too hard to rank for a search in the WordPress Plugin Directory
3. I know that a light-weight plugin is relatively easy to code
4. Why not try an experiment to find out?

That's what I've done. I've created a plugin and will submit it for inclusion in the Plugin Directory.
