Can anyone recommend where I can get a merchant ID. I am looking to work with a bank directly and not a payment processor as our last payment processor Stripe screwed US over.

If you go to your bank, they should be able to connect you directly. This industry is filled with middlemen and sales people all taking their cuts so tread lightly. I know First Data is one of the massive merchant services providers you could try.
