Can Digital Original XR on Meta Quest become a better virtual gallery experience for art and photography than websites?

While building Digital Original XR (DO XR) for Meta Quest, we noticed something interesting.

Multiple visitors interacting with artworks in a shared DO XR gallery on Meta Quest, demonstrating how immersive virtual spaces enable social art experiences beyond traditional websites and online portfolios.

Even when artworks are available online in high resolution, most people still view them on relatively small screens. The experience is often limited to scrolling and occasional zooming.

In XR, the experience feels different. You can stand in front of an artwork, view it at scale, move closer, and explore details naturally.

User exploring artwork details inside a virtual XR gallery, demonstrating close-up viewing of digital art in Meta Quest.

We started Digital Original XR to experiment with a simple idea:

What if digital art and photography could be experienced more like a gallery visit and less like browsing a website?

I’m curious:

  • Have you ever viewed art in VR or XR?

  • Did it feel more engaging than viewing it on a traditional screen?

  • What would make you want to visit a virtual gallery?

I’d love to hear thoughts from artists, photographers, collectors, and XR enthusiasts.
