tl;dr - Board game event directory looking for ideas to pivot.
Hi all, Joe here, founder of weTabletop. We help players find local tabletop, card, and board game events.
I finally got my first (and second!) paying customer and hit 12k MAU. Then coronavirus hit.
Now, events are being cancelled, site traffic has dropped dramatically, and both customers have suspended their paid service.
I totally understand why. And I’m not complaining. So I’m going to pivot. But I have no idea what to pivot to!
So, fellow IH readers, can you help? Any ideas on what problems to solve in the board game industry, for players, shops, retailers, or a combo? Let’s brainstorm in the comments!
First idea requires a large user base so won't work right now but keep it in mind for the next crisis. Help bring people together who have already created a connection and allow them to continue to connect and continue playing. This is just as applicable for people who meet at an event but live far away from each other as it is during a pandemic.
Second, building on the idea of remote play: Each player has a copy of the board, after a play makes a move they take a picture of the board as a way to "save the current play state". Then all other players can make that same move on their board. Then the next player makes their move and so on.
Thanks for the ideas. There might be something around the "take a picture" playing if I can organize it in a way that makes sense for everyone.
Grear one @joemasilotti
Definitely not the best moment right now, but really appreciate you're celebrating the board game industry. Checked your landing page, not bad and nice execution.
Let's always look at the positive side. Apparently there're rooms for you to highlight and include more e-commerce elements, how to play, tips and hacks regarding different board games.
I'm also working on the new site for my small project, would be awesome to hear your advice!
I concur with both @Lakebed_io and @wardmemberspace , and will add; can you quickly build groups into your portal and then design some basic scoreboards for the popular games? Then your users can get their physical games boards going at home, and each player has their online scoreboard for the game where they enter their moves.
Then you could bring on a design partner that can make the scoreboards look amazing for each game. In this way, not only will you be providing an immediate service for your existing users, you'll also be building for the future.
No pivot required!
So the scoreboard would keep track of the entire game state? I'm not sure I follow.
In my mind I'm picturing a kind-of to-do list / chat interface that keeps a record of the moves and then the updated score per player and who's turn it is. This way every player can enter in their move and all others see it to be able to update their own physical board.
So off the top of my head I'm thinking people are still totally interested in playing board games but it would all need to be remote now. Perhaps a way to create and organize groups of people to play various games online?
Also it maybe be useful to niche down a bit here - so instead of ALL board games, maybe pick a specific popular once (e.g. Warhammer or Magic the Gathering). This way the website will resonate more with those people and you can also be active in their existing communities (forums, reddit, etc).
Thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking moving towards online events could be a good way to keep the site going for a while.
The site actually started as a single game. The problem is that I was entirely dependent on the success of that game. And, what do you know, it was recently cancelled.
Completely agree, I am seriously missing playing board games as my old groups can't meet/ are busy due to changes due to Covid and it would be lovely to find an online community.
And... here it is! Online board game events! I'm still working on the positioning but this MVP is enough to start testing. What do you think?

Exciting! I will be honest, as a student I haven't really spent that much money on purchasing gaming software, but I will check it out!
