Can you launch without a landing page?

I just launched pendragons.io, a productivity tool for freelance writers. I didn’t take the time to build a landing page with video intructions and a catchy value proposition. I decided to showcase a live account of my first user - my wife ;)

Do you think it is easy to understand what the app is all about and what its main features are?

Hey! Congratulations on your launch and new product!

I think it won't take you too much time to create a landing page, but you will benefit a lot. I'm sure it definitely won't be a waste of time.

Tell more about the product and show the most exciting points. Don't let perfectionism take over: just make the first version and improve when you gain feedback.

    Good luck!

      Indeed, perfection is the enemy.

Well, you don't necessarily need a landing page. As long as your website has a clear call to action, social proof, and key benefits, I think you should see conversions.

A landing page explains what a product is and does. Directly opening an app will just make it hard for people to understand. You can create a simple landing page with a great design on Webflow or WordPress using existing templates/themes. It won't even take a lot of time.
So, answering your question, you CAN launch without a landing page but there is just a negative outcome from it.

Thanks! I listen and update. There’s still a long way to go to make it right… ;)

I will avoid the question in the post as I (honestly) don't know the answer - but let me give you constructive feedback. Clicking on pendragons.io, scanning the first page, and I still didn't get what your product does! I would highly suggest adding a one sentence pitch to the homepage, ideally being the elephant in the web page. For example: "pendragons.io is a productivity tool for creative writers."

Thanks! I have listened and added a “landing page” - a popup with the product description and key features that opens to a visitor.

        Looks really great, godspeed response.

It's a question that comes up often: Can you launch without a landing page? My answer is always yes, and I'll tell you why.

Sure, you can launch a product without a landing page. But that doesn't mean it's the best way to do things.

When launching a new product, your goal should be to get people excited about your product—to make sure that they buy it and use it. And if you don't have a landing page set up, chances are good that won't happen!

Why? Because people need to know exactly what they're buying before they buy it. They need to be able to see all the details for themselves in order for them to make an informed decision about whether or not this product is going to be right for them. If they want something with more features or less features than your product has, then they'll go with someone else's instead of yours—which means no revenue for you!

That's why having a landing page before you launch is so important: It gives people all the information they need so they can make their decision while they're excited about buying from YOU instead of someone else!

Most helpful, thanks! I think I will have to go with a landing page, yes.

Thanks for the feedback! I deployed the updated version with a separate landing page and less friction on signup. No credit card needed for the free trial.

    Yes!

But you might want to reconsider.

A landing page is a page on your website where visitors can land when they click on a link from an ad, email, or social media post. It's a great way to direct traffic from other channels into your site, and you'll need at least one if you're going to launch a product successfully.

If you do decide not to create a landing page for your new product, make sure that the link in your ad or email clearly explains what the new product is and how it works. Don't make people click through multiple times before they understand what they're seeing and what they should do next—it will significantly increase your bounce rate, which means fewer people will see your ads and buy your product!

Yes, thanks! Communication even before the landing page is crucial.

    Oh, you bet!

If you're just launching a new product, there's no need to spend time and money on creating a landing page. You can use your website or social media accounts to promote the launch, and then follow up with emails to customers who have shown interest in similar products before.

It's also important to let your existing customers know about new products or services. This will help build trust with those customers and make them more likely to buy from you again.

The short answer is no. You absolutely need to have a landing page for your product, and it should be as simple as possible. Landing pages are what help you get noticed on the internet, and they can be an incredibly powerful tool for growing your business—if you know how to use them right.

We're going to break down everything you need to know about landing pages, so you can start using them right away!

Hmmmm, I was thinking of adding content to my exisiting first page that would be visible only to non-registered users. What you are saying, makes me reconsider this idea. This would still be a dynamic webapp that usually isn’t very SEO-friendly, so it would be better to build a separate landing page, optimized for search engines.

Landing pages are so easy with wordpress... you can put up a site for under $10 per month. You have to set up some DNS records with your registrar, and then build a site, but it's not too hard. I'm using Divi theme by elegant themes which allows you to format your site to be like your app.

I think a landing page would still help you, but you should definitely keep and highlight the demo—very nice.

But hey, you’re launching, you’re receiving feedback, and you’re iterating. Keep at it.

      Thanks for the feedback!

Your site looks really nice and does explain what the product does, but I think you could also benefit from a landing page for these reasons:

    • On a landing page you can highlight the benefits of your product AND why it's better/different from other products (your unique selling position)
    • A landing page is a great place to put testimonials
    • You can test conversions on a landing page
    • You can have a clear and urgent call to action on a landing page

    Hope that helps

You sure have a point, thanks. I will think of combining both - the explicit information and the demo.
