I'm gonna build a review website for a specific industry.
Could not find other review sites for this niche. The top Google positions all belong to Yelp, mostly.
My question: How hard would competing with Yelp be? Would it be possible, without being crazy difficult, to outrank Yelp, given that the website will be specific to this industry? Have you had similar experiences like this?

I've done a decent amount of work in the local smb world ( specifically around florists ) and we were indirectly competing with Yelp, it's not easy. SEO takes a long time to show it's results and at the end of the day links are key. I don't know what industry you are in but I agree with @harveycabraham. It can be done, but it's going to take time and work.
True, the time involved with SEO casts my biggest shadow of doubt. Links are a big part of my strategy though, if I notice that I won't be getting them I won't bother with this idea too much.
Could you explain what "indirectly" competing with Yelp means? Like only for some keywords?
We were more of a marketplace to sell local flowers and Yelp wasn't really doing that at the time. So while we competed on the main listing, we were more interested in ranking the local florist's product pages.
I see. Thanks.
not the right fight to fight for a bootstrapper
Actually, if I validate my idea, I will be spending hardly any money at all.
Curious though, what do you think is a good fight for a bootstrapper? :)
