Career comparison tool to help job seekers identify transferable skills?

I can't tell you if this is a good idea or not, but I can give you practical advice to figure out if this is a good idea or not(since I've been doing the same thing for sometime now).

I would probably drill down further and figure out what's the exact problem she is facing?

It could be any one of the following:

1. She has a general sense of what she wants to do, but she's not able to decide between similar fields? For example People Operations(HR) and talent Acquisition are both people functions, sort of the same thing, but different.

2. She knows what she wants to do, but she does not whats required for her to get an interview for these positions and maybe a job(that's what you've figured out)

3. Maybe she knows everything but she's not able to discover opportunities which are open to hiring someone from a different field.

All of the above are different problems and will have different solutions.

I would ask her questions of the following type:

1. What do you do when try to find a job in another field? - Do you go search on google and or is there a specific website you go to?
2. What type of a job interests you?
3. What are a few things you will look for if I give you a job posting which interests you.

Don't ask for a problem, ask the workflow they follow.
Don't ask people for problems, you'll get too many different opinions of no real use. Ask for the workflow or process that users follow, and you'll be able to discover the problems. Also do not propose or try to suggest a solution. That will not help. You should just be look for a problems.

At a high level ->
You are not trying to build an app. You are trying to find a solution to a problem that pays you money. Customers tell you their workflow, you distill the problem out of it, figure out if it's profitable to solve, and iterate on the solution till you get a product market fit. Everything else is just a detail

Do the above process for enough people and you should be able to figure out a real problem and then you can check if it's worth solving or not.

Also think about potential users, and running a quick mental simulation will help you understand if this is even worth making:

1. Try to figure out how many people actually want to change there careers ->
   For example
   1. people in an industry affected by a slowdown might be looking for new oppurtunities. Kinda like how covid impacted flight attendants.
   2. Or look at jobs which you can only do upto a certain age and have to transition to other roles after that. Short service commissioned Army personal generally have to move to new industries after their service period with the army ends.

The more examples like the above you can come up with the bigger potential target audience your product has and the better chances your product will have of being a success!!!
