Celebrating small win: Clear Mail for Gmail has hit 100 weekly active users

Just hit 100 weekly active users 🚀

I launched Clear Mail for Gmail (a Chrome extension) on 6th February 2025 to help people clean their Gmail inboxes in a privacy-first way. No OAuth tokens needed, no sharing of any user email data, only local processing and 100% privacy.

You can read more about Clear Mail on my Indie Hackers introduction post

I decided to build this tool because:

  • I was personally frustrated with messy inboxes

  • I wanted to build a unique product that works in 100% private manner, no fluff, no nonsense

  • I wanted to build, launch, grow the product and learn as I go

Fast forward to today (2 months later), and we’ve crossed 100 weekly active users. 100 WAU is not huge — but 100 real people are using this every week, and that feels amazing. ❤️

A few things I’ve learned so far:

  • Keep it simple — users love simplicity, clean UI and clear purpose

  • Respect privacy — Emails are private communication and people do appreciate privacy

  • Marketing is important - I have been posting/launching my app on various Startup directories (done 30+ till now) and have seen user growth. The best one was Betalist which brought me a nice spike in traffic.

  • Launching on Chrome Webstore helps - CWS, being a Google product helps ranking on Google and is great for SEO.

Next goals:

  • Hit 1000 WAUs in the next 6 months

  • Add more features, making it more valuable for my users

  • Continue marketing my product - focus on listing on more startup directories, explore Reddit for promoting, invest more on SEO etc.

Thanks for reading, and to everyone who’s also in the early stages: celebrate the small wins. They keep you going. 🙌

Wow! Congratulations. Tiny cost‑saving side note (ignore if not relevant): my team has a spare GitHub Enterprise Cloud 1‑year license for 20 users we’re off‑loading at cost (85 % under list) plus a small MongoDB credit. If reducing dev‑tool spend helps extend your runway, DM me and I’ll share the escrow link.

Thanks for the cost saving suggestion! I currently don't need it, but will keep in mind in case I have need for it in the future.

Wow that's so nice. Do you mention also go for other mail services?

Thanks Raffel! Sorry, I was not clear about your question, did you mean - can Clear Mail work for other email services, other than Gmail? The answer is no, it doesn't and I don't have any plans to support other email services as of now. I want to grow Clear Mail for Gmail to a large user base, before I consider others like Outlook etc.

Congratulations! Are you considering paid marketing? Or are you purely committed to organic?

Thanks Kuval! This is all organic. At this stage, I am not looking at paid marketing.

Can you share the sources that worked best for you in terms of incremental users added, if you can pinpoint them? Like you mentioned Betalist. Thanks.

Sure, here's the list of Startup directories that I am following. There are 400+ startup directories here: https://bsky.app/profile/onlinedopamine.com/post/3lc2ybkh33s2d

You can also check out this post by Johnny Builds, which I referred to, while submitting my startup. https://bsky.app/profile/johnnybuilds.bsky.social/post/3ldjjklkg4s24

Interestingly, most of the good startup directories (apart from Betalist) have not listed me yet, I am currently on their waitlist. As I get listed on those directories, I think it will bring me more visibility and more users.

Congratulations! It's inspiring to see solo developers achieving such things and sharing advice. Keep it up!

That's so awesome! One of the worst ways to fail at starting a business is to create a product that no one wants. I'm sure it feels great to be past that point, and to know that you are creating real value for your customers. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Aiden, for your kind words. And you are right, it is really satisfying to build something that people really want and use!

Congratulations! Would you be interested in a pitch deck for your company to pitch to investors?

Thanks Den, I am not currently raising money for my product/startup. Still, you can share the pitch deck and I can have a look.
