...Nightcrawler (2014), starring the infamous Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Bloom, a hyper-driven oddball who breaks into the world of L.A. crime journalism.
Here’s why this movie is the ultimate hustle-fuel:
What Bloom lacks in experience (zero), he more than makes up for in persistence. Sure, he’s a bit unhinged, but you’ve got to appreciate his grit. Case in point: “What I believe, sir, is that good things come to those who work their a$$es off.” 👊
You won’t find Bloom’s face buried in a how-to book titled 10 tips to become a successful freelance journalist. Nope! And he doesn’t waste time over-analyzing his next move. Instead, he dives into the deep-end, and learns to swim. He even asks his very first customer (Nina) what exactly she is looking for. Nina says she wants footage that is extremely graphic. Bloom's response: “I understand.” Then, he delivers. Less talking/thinking, more doing. 👈
Bloom is a master negotiator. His focus and energy overwhelms his listeners, in a good way. He’s a straight-talker and he commands every conversation he starts. Bloom has a gut-feel for leverage, and once he knows he has it, it’s game over. For example, once he realizes the TV station is addicted to his service, he begins making big-dawg demands like “starting now, I want my work to be credited by the anchors,” and how he’d like to be introduced to the decision-makers at the station. My personal favorite: “I’m not done, I also want to stop our discussion over prices. This will save time.” Preach. 💪
In one sense, Bloom is the classic sociopath who lacks empathy. But, he also seems to be more self-aware than we give him credit for. Take this exchange with a SMB owner, for example: “Who am I? I'm a hard worker. I set high goals and I've been told that I'm persistent.” Knowing who you are kick-starts a little thing I like to call “opportunity magic.” ✌️
According to Bloom, “if you want to win the lottery you've got to make money to buy a ticket.” 🎟️ Hard to argue with that!
Office Space. Hands down the winner! ;)
