Thanks to another post somewhere on IH, I just found out about Stripe's policy around charge disputes. If somebody disputes a charge, the vendor is charged $15 and they also take whatever revenue is being disputed. If the bank decides in your favor, the $15 and revenue is returned, otherwise you lose it all. This makes me pretty uncomfortable, considering nothing is stopping anybody from disputing charges. Somebody or rather a group of people could abuse this system and possibly drive a company out of business.
Has anybody had any issues with charge disputes on Stripe?!
Our experience with chargebacks is definitely worse than those mentioned in the comments above. This may not reflect your business as our model is likely slightly different to yours. We run a membership and event management system which uses Stripe Connect for payment processing (UK + Ireland based):

The issues I see with the chargeback system, which may/may not be the same as in the US:
Some things I would suggest to minimise chargebacks:
I believe industry figures are around 1% of payments are disputed, I think we've found it around the 0.5% to 1% mark.
Hopefully some of this might help!
Really great feedback. Thanks a million! Godspeed
I wouldn't worry about it, it's not as bad as it sounds. Out of $4.5m we've had less than $500 disputed on Stripe and only lost in one case.
Sometimes people will do it by accident if they don't recognise the charge and a friendly email can have it resolved promptly.
If someone raises a dispute, you can submit evidence to Stripe – and they are very helpful.
From my own experience, the number of people who will try and rip you off is extremely low.
Ok, sweet. That definitely eases some of my concerns. I was feeling pretty uncomfortable about the whole thing before.
I think it's just the cost of doing business. You have to assume that the majority of the people are honest. There is the analogy that you open a shop and there is some shoplifting, but you won't shutdown the entire shop just because of this. You would put some measures in to reduce shoplifting.
Stripe has Radar which detects fraudulent behaviour. Also, you can refund a charge before a dispute with the bank is raised. Tell the users to talk to you before raising a dispute with the bank. Refunding a charge does have a slight transaction charge though.
Any idea what the refund charge is?
It's the charge you pay for a successful transaction.
so 2.9% + 30c?
Sounds about right, depends on which country your Stripe account is setup in.
thanks
I'd say that the chargeback % of total transaction volume is going to depend on the business, product, and/or service you are offering, but with marketplaces it can be very high.
I went on a tweet storm about this yesterday (https://twitter.com/Yoroomie/status/1056226000718114816) and reducing chargebacks and fraud has been one of my main focuses with Studiotime (marketplace for booking music studios).
I'm happy to share more about this, some of the product/processes put in place to reduce it, etc.
just read your twitter thread. the reason this whole chargeback thing concerns me is because i'm registering a business instead of incorporating the business as a corporation, which means i'll personally be liable for any costs whereas corporations usually have limited personal liability. you're experience is pretty disconcerting
That makes the most sense, that the rate depends on the type of business.
Please do share more! Why do you think you're having to deal with so much fraud in your business/industry?
I think it's best to just understand that when using Stripe Connect custom accounts, you are going to carry the liability of the total transaction volume (+chargeback fees) in the absolute worse case. If you are just starting out, bootstrapping, and your revenue model is taking a nominal percentage of each transaction as commission, a few high-value instances of fraud or chargebacks can potentially cost you thousands and wipe out your revenue (even causing you to go in the negative and shutdown). This is worse case scenario, but I think something that people should be aware of.
If you don't want to have this liability, you could use Stripe connect standard or PayPal's marketplace product if you want to pass the liability on to the providers. This is of course is a whole other discussion that's quite extensive with pro's & con's of each (and specific to your business).
Regarding your question about who it is such a issue with Studiotime, I don't want to sound too negative about the music industry, but there are some individuals who of course take the opportunity to cheat the system when it comes to doing the right thing and especially with online products, services, and platforms such as Studiotime.
Full liability of the total cost of transactions? Or am I misunderstanding you?
Is that exclusive to the 'Connect' product, as opposed to the 'Payment' or 'Billing' products that Stripe offers?
I absolutely hate PayPal that has some despicable business practices. I will never do business them!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and all of this information with me!
Correct, when using Stripe's marketplace connect custom you would carry the full liability of the total transaction volume.
I'm not exactly sure of their payment or billing liability, so I'd recommend asking them about this and doing some research on it.
Agree about PayPal and why I switched from at first using PayPal's marketplace payments product to now Stripe.
Glad I could provide some insights!
wow im def gon have to look into that. that's scarier than ppl disputing charges...
The chargeback fee of 15 usd is not something Stripe can control, it's put in place by card processors.
i know. i find it interesting, however, that they pass the entire cost along to their own customers.
The number of disputes is really depends on the business model. Some services provide immediate values e.g seo key words finder and lead generation and some tool will provide values when you continuously use them e.g any analytical, sales and support products. I saw, the disputes rate is very high for immediate value business.
In my startup, we are facing lot of disputes from specific african country. They use fraud credit card for generating leads. After few weeks, disputes will be credited by original credit card owner. I am having hard time to fix this issue. By the way, I use paddle.
Thanks for sharing this insight. Any idea why that might be the case?
Also, why'd you go with paddle and not Stripe since the fees are more?
The reason is that they generates data from our app and sell it some where else.
We use paddle since stripe is not available in my country.
Interesting. What data could they possibly be generating from using your app that they can then sell at a profit elsewhere?
We are B2B Lead Generation Platform. They generate leads and sell it somewhere else.
that makes sense
