I've spent, and still spend, a lot of time trying to think of SaaS ideas that would be profitable, fun to build, and within my skillset to accomplish. After years of following successful founders on Twitter, indulging in every start-up podcast I could find, and reading numerous business-minded books (let's be honest, I listened to them 🤣) - I found myself convinced and chasing this idea of a single product that would generate revenue.
It was met with dead-end after dead-end. Which is fair. Building a business isn't easy.
So, I took a look at the skills I've developed over my career and decided to build something around that to see if it would generate revenue. It was an agency. A dime-a-dozen business idea, but it worked! I've made more money on the internet (and it isn't a lot yet) in the last month with this endeavor than I have in two years of trying to build a product.
I'd convinced myself that this was taking the easy way out, but agencies are inherently difficult. There's a lot of work that has to be done, constantly, to keep things moving forward. It isn't all programming work and it isn't generating millions, but it's generating some- and that's more than I've ever done before.
I guess I'm writing this to further convince myself I'm making the right move. It's the only move that has generated any income, and by that metric, it's currently the winning one.
You are good Drew, no need to convince yourself.
Nothing wrong with reaching your goals on an alternative path. Everyone trying to make money through building a SaaS doesn't make it any difference or better. I believe they also have their own downsides.
Good part imho, now it's more likely that you can build tools for your already existing clients or for yourself to ease your job. In case you want to.
And please explain this part; "this was taking the easy way out". Dealing with clients is a nightmare for me, that's the reason I thought building products to sell was the easy way out. It would be great if I can find something good to hold on about doing freelancing/agency work.
Easy way out in the sense that it's a proven business model with an easily identifiable problem and solution. Definitely not easier in regards to dealing with clients. I'm hoping the process we're building will mitigate some of the overhead in client interactions- but time will tell.
Thank you for the words of support!
