Choosing the right name for a product

Hello everybody!

This is my first post at Indie Hackers even though I'm part of the community for about 2 years already. So, the plan was that my first post would be different but here is the story...

I was configuring last stuff on my server, excited and ready to launch my product when I made a typo in the browser... the typo was the last letter of the 4-letter name I had picked for it, set everywhere, had several domains with it, etc. I felt quite dumb noticing that there is a product, recently launched on product hunt with a name that has only one letter difference with mine.

After all the delays I've been doing with this side-project, all these weeks to polish stuff, now I have to delay it again. The result is that instead of happy post about launching, I'm now back on the notepad writing stuff.

So, what's your process of thinking of a product name? I might be doing it wrong after all 😂 .

Cheers!

    I usually follow these steps

    • Check for domain name availability
    • Check for social handles
    • Do a google search and see want comes up, this is something I only started recently, But it is important to catch any weird stuff or competition with a similar name
    • Copypaste the domain name always, as I have a fat finger myself :)

Just adding another point to that list:
