CiteGenius so far

Hello! I'm Jacob Smith, a self-funding founder of CiteGenius ( https://www.citegenius.com ). I'm currently working 9-5 doing contract work in order to save up some money to either devote more time towards CiteGenius or put some additional money in marketing.

I originally had the idea of the site in college and built a version that me and some friends used, but I didn't know how to market it or get enough users to make it worth maintaining. I'm almost a decade out of college now and have rebuilt it from scratch with a more focused offering.

Stats so far:

Finances:

  • $200 for Jumpstart Rails template (worth every penny)
  • $20 * 3 months for GoRails tutorials (I'm coming back to Rails after a few years working at a PHP shop, so it's helped get up to speed on Rails 6 features)
  • $100 for Looka logo generator and social media assets
  • $15 * 3 months for Heroku
  • $10 in Google Ads (just started Friday, have no idea what I'm doing, will probably revist)
  • $15 Domain

Total so far: ~$430

Revenue: $0

Users: 0

I'm currently reaching out to teachers/students that I know to try and do some additional market research. I feel like I have a decent understanding since I originally wrote it for myself, but there's a big difference between that and a sustainable business.

Cheers!
