Civic Tech: Used JavaScript to Give Unofficial Identity to Half a Billion Indians Who Lack Official ID
I'm Shambhavi, 18, taking a gap year and teaching myself to code from a remote army campus in a jungle area of India. In my country, over 450 million informal workers lack official identification documents. This keeps them locked out of critical government services, banking, and basic dignity.
The Solution: Project Parichay (Identity):
I used HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and an India Post PIN API to create a tool that generates printable digital ID cards. These IDs include all necessary information, auto-filled location data, and a QR code. It's not a legal replacement, but it's immediate proof of identity and residence that can be used now.
