Claiming Social/Digital Handles: August 21

Claiming names for a new project is exhausting.

What platform handles do you claim when starting a new project?

I'll start with the obvious:

  • Domain/Website/Blog
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram

There are no bad answers. Platform doesn't need to apply to all businesses, but it should have the possibility that a business might be able to use it for leverage.

Check out Namecheckr, it helps figure out what's taken and where - useful for planning out what name you ultimately want to lock in:

I normally take whatever might be immediately relevant to launch; more often than not, Facebook and Twitter.

TikTok and LinkedIn perhaps. Not sure how handles work on LinkedIn though.

Both of these make sense -- I think with Linkedin, it would be establishing the business profile?

There's a business idea in the making!

Would people pay for broad name checking and registration? How to avoid being spammy and avoid squatting?

      That's a great point. There's probably 2 products there:

      1. Name checking -- easy to execute, plug into an API, do some web scraping, etc. the profile name is usually listed in the URL
      2. Registration -- this would be more difficult because the third-party (social media company) would control all on-boarding

The first would be relatively easy to execute on...

Update: the https://www.namecheckr.com/ Namecheckr product listed in the above comment is a pretty good resource for this.

It does look like its missing some obvious ones: Snapchat, TikTok, etc.
