Coaching on steroids

Hey guys

Today I had a call from a dev friend. He explained me an issue he had in his deployment workflow, using nginx and React. With four environments, he needed some advice on the solution he was using to set custom env variables for each environment. We had a 5 min chat and after asking a few questions, I suggested 1-2 extra solutions to explore. He was immediately delighted. ☀️

We all know this kind of discussion with our peers. Just explaining the issue out lout helps to solve our problem. Whatever the problem is, dev, sales, you name it. 💬

We can do this here on IH by writing our issue and seeking feedback. But what about 1-on-1 chat to discuss the issue? A quick 5 min chat with someone else in the same field could bring instantly some solutions. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

I was wondering if there is any online way to do this. There must be something that exist. If it does, have u tried it? Can u share the link?

If it does not exist, am imagining something like "Uber for coaching" where you can request coaching session live for a small fee.

WDYT?

I think what you are describing is called CodeMentor (https://codementor.com). I've recently tried mentoring people through this platform, and it was amazing, it's my favorite thing to do now.

I'd love to find more platforms like this though, more ways to find students, because I'd love doing it full time, and it's hard to find enough students to book enough mentorship sessions.

If you build a coaching platform (or find a good one) - please let me know. I'd love to be one of your first users.

Romain – could not agree more 😊! Just having someone listen and give us the space to process our thoughts out loud can help us figure out our own solutions (without any advice or mentoring needed). I know that you referred to it from a purely tech standpoint, but I've seen this day in and day our in my role as a coach to startup founders.

After being a coach to startup founders for ~3 years, over the past 6 months I've been working on a tech-enabled peer coaching platform called RunYourself (https://www.runyourself.co/). I'm not sure if it's quite what you had in mind, but it has similar principles at heart. It's not ad-hoc – you're meant to have the same partner for ~3-6 months and meet regularly with them. We put a lot of effort in the matching process and training people how to coach rather than jump in with advice.

Always willing to chat more on this topic! I'm all about democratising access to coaching and love seeing different concepts arise in this space 🙏

Maybe https://www.scalehigher.com is building something in that direction?

Wondering if the founder is part of Indie Hacker... haven't found him yet.

I definitely see the value here, because your right that pair programming is insanely valuable to a dev, whether they are a newbie dev or an establish one there is always a benefit to learning from others or trying to explain a concept.

I'm not sure how it'd work for other professions though. I don't really know if plumbers are interested in seeking out guidance from others, or if teachers are interested in learning about how other teachers are planning a session. Hard to say.

I'd guess the comments here will give you some ideas and thoughts to consider, but this ideas seems worth validating. Good luck.

Not exactly this but we are building Oxogen.io which gives founders regular opportunity to get different perspectives from both peers and expert mentors. Focus is more on product and business than tech questions but is looking to solve a similar challenge.

I was in a startup community that enables 1 on 1 discussions offline. The founder eventually got another job and ditched. I think it's just difficult to monetize this. Professional consulting is just too expensive for founder to pay for without a clear set expected outcome. But without pay, even the ones asking are not going to follow through, hence waste time for both parties.

I've thought about this myself. Mainly because I like coaching too :)

I recalled doing a bit of research and finding https://wyzant.com.

From what I read from tutors on there, it tends to be seasonal and the students are almost all in school (usually HS and college). You don't really find too many professionals seeking assistance that way.

That's a cool idea, also a very big idea. I haven't seen anything like that before, would you start with any particular niche? Like devs

    1. 2

Do u have some other niche in mind?

      1. 1

not particularly. any niche where a decent level of technical/specific knowledge is required. but also a large enough niche to support the ecosystem. the first thought (devs) might be the best thought!

    2. 2

Yeah it seems like starting with a niche like dev would be a nice start. Am sure something similar exists 🤔

I'm doing quite the same on Karma Community with the category Coaching:https://karma-community.com/skill/coaching-1650995709869x609267104803984100
And yes, devs (60% of my members) are super happy with it.
