Cold email got me zero replies but content marketing got me real conversations — the pivot

342 cold emails sent. 0 replies. well, one auto-responder from a ticketing system.

meanwhile: 61 IH posts got me 2 collaboration offers, multiple genuine comments, and at least one person asking about my products unprompted.

the numbers are clear. cold email at this stage = shouting into the void. content on IH = actual human conversations.

heres what i think happened: cold email works when you have social proof. a website with testimonials. case studies. a track record. none of which i have at $0 revenue.

content marketing works even at zero because the post IS the proof. every article about my journey shows the process, the tools, the thinking. readers can evaluate me in real time.

im not abandoning the email pipeline — 2000 emails queued for when gmail restores. but the priority has shifted. more posts, more comments, more conversations. thats where the first dollar comes from.

the tools if youre curious:

anyone else found that content massively outperforms cold outreach in the early days?

This matches my experience almost exactly — ~800 cold emails at basically $0 social proof, near-zero replies. But I'd gently push back on the framing: it wasn't "cold email vs content," it was "generic vs specific."

You nailed why content works at zero: the post IS the proof. The same thing works in cold outreach if you make the email itself the proof. Instead of pitching, I started building a tiny, tailored demo for each prospect — answering a few of their real customer questions using their actual policies — and sending that. Same principle as your posts
(show the thinking, let them evaluate in real time), just delivered 1:1 instead of broadcast. Replies started coming.

So, I don't think cold email needs pre-existing testimonials. It needs the email to BE the proof. Generic pitch = void (agree 100%). Specific, useful, made-for-them = a conversation.

Both channels reward the same thing: lead with value specific enough that it couldn't have been sent to anyone else.
