com vs io?

Hi Everyone!

What's your thoughts on when to use a .com vs .io domain? Has anyone swapped from either to the other before?

We've been toying around with the idea of swapping to a .com from a .io (https://tryblook.com vs currently https://blook.io). In our particular case, even though our product is marketed for the technical founder / entrepreneur, the general population can use it too. I believe there might be an unconscious bias towards .com over .io for the general user even as .io has become more ubiquitous for startups.

Would love to hear your thoughts or anecdotes!

Best,
Pedro

this is becoming a non-issue more and more as .io domains become more prominent in culture.

if you can get the .com... you should always do that. but, a .io is just as good. i've been running one for a long time... and even now, my own project's domain is https://yen.io!

    it's worked just fine.

agree with @8bit. I prefer using a verb with .com, but .io is a great extension.

i like how you're even more specific with you're use — verb + .com

what's an example of this that you're using / have used?

I've used get + company/app name.com and that seemed to work alright. It's near impossible to land a decent .com nowadays (affordably). Some other prefixes I've seen lately: try,on, use, with, join

          yup. gotcha.

i know the person who owns the .com of my primary domain... and he said it's at least "7 figures"... ... 🤦🏻‍♂️

I had a .com for 3 years and recently just kept it as .com, the thought of keeping it .io is good, especially if its the new age of startups. In the end, it doesn't make that much of a difference, If I now open something up I would focus more on what is on the website rather than its domain, which is a mistake I would have egoistically committed 5 years ago.

    choose .com in priority. Always

If your product is b2b or for tech-people, .io is fine. My impression is that normal people don't really know about the .io domain. Anecdotally, I can't name a single common service that uses .io.

    Why no us Domain?

We work with global founders, so I think the .us might throw people off. But Zoom uses it, so who knows!

Can you please (iam from germany) explain to me why a .us domain separate you from peoples? (no front i just want to understand)
