Commenting platforms. Yes or no?
We just installed Disqus on Bitcompare.net
We've been hesitant to add it mainly because we don't feel comfortable with handing over such an integral part of the platform and community to a third party like that. we also don't like having their branding on the platform.
Has anyone else used it? What do you think?
What I did back when I was working on Faraday Motion was to setup our own self hosted forum.
Having been accustomed with laravel I went for Flarum. It did the job great and took little to no time to setup.
Not sure if Flarum would suit you, but I'd recommend self hosting vs depending on a vendor.

I provide spam-filtering for comment systems so read a lot of articles about comment systems.
I used to have it for my blog as well but moved away from it. It's a privacy nightmare. It shows targeted ads, collects users' data, no anonymous comment support.
A good paid alternative would be commento. No ads, privacy-friendly. Support migration from Disqus.
Or free, self-hosted and open-source https://posativ.org/isso/. They also have a way to migrate from Disqus. However, It doesn't have integration with a spam filter. if you decide to host it yourself, you could integrate spam-filtering with OOPSpam Anti-Spam API.
I've used disqus on some of my sites before (when it was really popular) but eventually switched back to internal commenting system (mainly WP comments) mostly for the reasons you already mentioned.
