Communities: The good, bad, and the ugly?

I'm doing some freelance community building, as well as looking to overhaul my own.

I'd love to hear your take on four questions:

  • What communities are you a part of that are most engaging?
  • What makes those communities engaging?
  • What community platforms do you specifically love or hate
  • What frustrates you in online communities?

Thanks in advance!

    1. Several subreddits I visit tick this box for me /r/mma in particular
    2. Quality moderation is one of the biggest differences I've seen (at least for Reddit)
    3. I'm not a fan of communities where people are totally anonymous, upvote / downvote systems are always a plus.
    4. Rampant low effort self promotion is usually a tell of a poorly run community for me.

Love and agree with all of this. How much do you engage in a native desktop or mobile app vs. in browser?

Mostly on my desktop. If I'm out and I need to kill some time, then I'll use a mobile app.
